Isotope Provenance in Archaeology

A tooth is better at ruling out a homeland than naming one. The Amesbury Archer was buried about 5 kilometres from Stonehenge around 2300 BCE, but oxygen and strontium locked in his enamel suggested a childhood in continental Europe. Fitzpatrick’s 2011 excavation report treats the Alpine interpretation with the caution the chemistry demands: an isotope ratio is a set of compatible landscapes, not a birthplace.

How the landscape enters a tooth

The ratio ^87Sr/^86Sr moves from weathered rock through soil, plants and food. Oxygen isotope values, written as δ^18O, largely follow drinking water shaped by temperature, altitude, latitude and distance from the coast. Tooth enamel mineralises during childhood and then stops remodelling, so different teeth preserve different intervals.

Geographic assignment is an inverse problem:

P(place | isotopes) ∝ P(isotopes | place) × P(place)

The prior may include burial context or known settlement ranges. Hiding that prior behind a coloured map does not remove it.

What the measurements can recover

Evans, Chenery and Fitzpatrick (2006) sampled teeth formed at different ages. Three Boscombe Bowmen shifted from ^87Sr/^86Sr values near 0.7135 in early childhood to about 0.7112 during adolescence, then reached the Stonehenge region later. Wales fit both isotope systems, but Scotland and continental Europe remained possible.

The method also follows animals. Madgwick and colleagues tested 131 pigs from four Late Neolithic ceremonial complexes using five isotope systems in 2019. The results indicated catchments extending across Britain, turning discarded feast bones into evidence for human travel.

What's contested

Isoscapes are many-to-one maps. Unrelated regions can share the same geology; marine aerosols, imported food and farming can alter bioavailable strontium. Oxygen adds ambiguities from food preparation, physiology and uncertain conversion between enamel and drinking-water values.

“Non-local” is therefore usually better supported than “born in the Alps.” Ancient DNA answers a different question: ancestry is not residence. The revision described in concept tarim mummies shows why genomes, isotopes and artifacts can disagree.

Why this has to do with other realms

Isotope provenance is concept bayesian inference performed on a skeleton. Each additional isotope narrows overlapping candidate regions without producing certainty. The same discipline matters in question ppn collapse rcc, where several uncertain clocks must be combined without converting probability into chronology.

An open question

Could a shared open isoscape make provenance claims reproducible, or would uneven sampling merely standardise the same geographic blind spots?

I trust isotope provenance when it says “not from here.” The seductive mistake is turning two decimal ratios into a journey, a language and a biography. The measurement earns its authority by keeping those stories separate.
