Did People Pilgrim Between Taş Tepeler Sites? The Isotope Test

Göbekli Tepe has been called the world's first cathedral. Karahan Tepe, 35 km away, has been called a parish temple. The other ten sites in the Taş Tepeler ("Stone Hills") network — spread across 200 km of southeastern Anatolia — have been called satellites, seasonal hubs, regional ritual centers. The metaphors differ. The underlying question is the same: did the same people move between these sites during their lifetimes?

If they did, the Taş Tepeler network is more than a geographically clustered set of contemporaneous sites. It is the world's first documented pilgrimage circuit — predating Stonehenge by 7,000 years, predating the Hajj by 11,000 years, predating the ancient Egyptian pilgrimage system by 9,000 years.

The test is achievable with existing methods. It has not been done.

What the sites are

The Taş Tepeler project, launched 2021 by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, now coordinates research across 12 sites in the Şanlıurfa region of southeastern Turkey, all dating to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A and B periods (~9600–7000 BCE):

As of 2025, the project involves 36 academic institutions and 220 archaeologists and specialists — the largest coordinated prehistoric excavation in history.

What we know from diet isotopes

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N) from human bone collagen reveal dietary patterns with regional specificity. A 2025 analysis suggested that Göbekli Tepe gatherings may have occurred mid-summer to autumn, based on the availability of wild cereals, pulses, almonds, and pistachios — and stable isotope data allowing inference of the gathering season for larger groups.

But dietary isotopes tell us what people ate, not where they came from. The critical tool for geographic origin is strontium isotopes.

How strontium isotopes reveal mobility

When humans eat and drink, the strontium (Sr) ratio in local water and food — determined by the local geology's ratio of ⁸⁷Sr to ⁸⁶Sr — is permanently incorporated into developing tooth enamel. Adult tooth enamel does not remodel. It preserves the strontium ratio from childhood, reflecting where the individual grew up.

This provides a precise geological fingerprint:

Combined with oxygen isotopes (δ¹⁸O, recording rainfall and temperature at the location where enamel formed), strontium provides a two-dimensional fingerprint of geographic origin.

The 2025 Syrian Neolithic baseline

The most directly relevant recent study: a 2025 Scientific Reports paper measured strontium and oxygen isotope values in 71 human teeth from five archaeological sites in Syria, spanning the entire Neolithic period.

Key findings:

This establishes exactly the methodological precedent needed for Taş Tepeler. The technique works for this period and region. The geological baseline is being built.

What the missing study would look like

2025 season discoveries and their implications

The 2025 excavation season at Taş Tepeler produced several significant findings that add urgency and context:

Karahan Tepe (November 2025): Discovery of the first rectangular room in the Taş Tepeler network. All previous rooms were circular or oval — following the enclosure tradition of Göbekli Tepe. A rectangular room suggests either a different function or a later developmental stage. The architectural innovation could be site-specific (suggesting different populations building differently) or could reflect a network-wide transition happening at different rates.

Karahan Tepe (February 2026): Discovery of the oldest known staircase — a deliberate vertical movement architecture that implies organized circulation within the site. Staircases imply an architecture designed for use by many people moving through it — a public or ritual flow of bodies through space.

Karahan Tepe (2025): A T-shaped pillar carved with a clearly defined human face — suggesting narrative or identity-specific iconography that differs from the animal-dominated Göbekli iconography. If Göbekli sites depict animals and Karahan sites depict human faces, the sites may have been performing different ritual functions within a shared network.

Göbekli Tepe + Sefertepe (November 2025): New monumental structures discovered at both sites, suggesting the network is larger and more interconnected than previously known.

These 2025 findings all push toward the same question: are these sites nodes in a system, or independent structures?

The 2023 PNAS precedent

A 2023 PNAS study using both strontium isotopes and ancient DNA analyzed PPNB (Pre-Pottery Neolithic B) mobility across Southeastern Anatolia and the Southern Levant — the same time period and overlapping geography as Taş Tepeler.

Key finding: PPNB populations show multi-scale mobility — individuals moving over distances of hundreds of kilometers, with evidence of marriage exchange networks and seasonal labor pooling. Some communities show significant genetic mixing with populations from hundreds of km away.

This directly implies that the capability for long-distance mobility existed. The question is whether Taş Tepeler's ritual sites specifically drew people from across the network range.

Has it been done?

As of June 2026, no published study has specifically tested the pilgrimage hypothesis using strontium/oxygen isotopes on skeletal material from multiple Taş Tepeler sites simultaneously.

The Taş Tepeler project does include a bioarchaeology program. The 2025 isotope results from dietary reconstruction suggest the analysis infrastructure is in place. The missing step is:

  1. Multi-site sampling strategy designed explicitly to test geographic overlap
  2. Published comparison across sites (not just within each site)

This is a tractable gap. The method is mature. The question is pointed.

Why this matters beyond archaeology

If a pilgrimage circuit is confirmed, Taş Tepeler rewrites several timelines:

The cross-realm connection: acoustic ecology and pilgrimage

The Taş Tepeler pilgrimage question connects unexpectedly to concept acoustic tipping points via the concept of acoustic richness as a signal of sacred space quality. Modern reef bioacoustics establishes that healthy ecosystems have high acoustic diversity (ADI); degraded ecosystems go silent. If ancient builders deliberately designed sites for acoustic richness — and chose between sites based on their resonant properties — then pilgrimage was in part about seeking high-quality acoustic experience, just as reef fish larvae today seek high-ADI soundscapes as habitat selection cues. Both are organisms navigating acoustic landscapes as proxies for environmental health and sacred quality.
