Indian Textile Heritage
A Patan patola sari can take two weavers six to twelve months to finish. Both warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before a single shot crosses the loom — meaning the pattern exists, in pieces, before the cloth does. The Salvi families of Patan are down to roughly three or four practicing households. The technique is older than the Roman Empire.
India's textile tradition runs roughly 5,000 years unbroken. Mehrgarh sites (7,000 BCE, modern Pakistan) show early cotton cultivation; Indus Valley sites (2500 BCE) show indigo dyeing and woven cotton. By Roman times, Pliny the Elder was complaining that Indian textile imports drained 100 million sesterces a year from Rome. The depth that produced is not one tradition but a federation of regional specialties, most still actively produced, several actively dying.

Indigo — the color that ran an empire
Indigofera tinctoria yields a colorless precursor (indican) that becomes blue only after fermentation, oxidation, and reduction. The chemistry is finicky enough that mastery took millennia. By the 17th century, Indian indigo was the most valuable dye in global trade.
The British East India Company built one of its earliest balance-sheet pillars on Bengal indigo. By the 1850s, European planters were forcing Bengali farmers to plant indigo on a fixed share of their land at prices below cost. The 1859–60 Nil Bidroha (indigo revolt) in Nadia and Jessore became one of the first mass peasant mobilizations of the colonial period — a generation before the more famous nationalist movements.
In 1897, BASF released synthetic indigo. By 1914, the natural-indigo market had collapsed to roughly 4% of its 1895 volume. Today natural indigo is around 1% of global supply, surviving as a specialty input for premium denim and artisanal handloom. Most "indigo-dyed" jeans you own were colored by a coal-tar derivative invented in a German lab.
The pattern repeats across Indian textile crafts: dominant for centuries, displaced in a decade or two by industrial synthesis, surviving at the margin.
Surface design beyond the loom
- Block printing. Bagru and Sanganer (Rajasthan) use natural dyes and small wooden blocks; Ajrakh (Kachchh) involves 14–16 sequential print-and-wash steps, including resist-printing both sides in register.
- Kalamkari. Painted-and-dyed cotton from Andhra Pradesh — kalam (pen) + kari (work). Srikalahasti school is freehand; Pedana school is block-printed.
- Bandhani. Gujarat-Rajasthan tie-dye producing small dotted circles; a fine bandhani odhani can have 75,000+ individually tied knots.
- Chikankari. Lucknow whitework embroidery; Persian aristocratic origin, refined under Mughal patronage.
- Phulkari. Punjab; geometric darning-stitch embroidery on coarse khaddar.
- Zardozi. Metallic-thread embroidery; bridal and ceremonial; Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bhopal.
Why the depth — three structural reasons
Hereditary specialization. Specific communities — Padmasaliyars in Tamil Nadu, Devangs in Karnataka, Salvi in Patan, Ansari Muslims in Varanasi — inherited specific craft knowledge across dozens of generations. That density is hard to replicate where craft is a market choice rather than a kinship inheritance. It is also fragile in the opposite direction: when one Salvi family stops weaving, a node in a 900-year network closes.
Patronage, not market. Temple festivals required ceremonial textiles. Royal courts maintained karkhanas (workshops). The demand floor was structural — not subject to the boom-bust cycles a market would impose. Mughal imperial workshops c. 1550–1750 pushed jamdani and brocade to technical levels rarely matched since.
Regional geography produced regional fiber. Bengal humidity grew long-staple cotton. Kashmir cold grew Changthangi undercoat. Assam, lacking mulberry, domesticated wild silkmoths instead. The fiber map and the weave map are the same map.
What's contested / what's dying
How much hereditary craft knowledge has already been lost is genuinely unknown. The Salvi double-ikat is the famous case — but Jamdani master weavers in Bangladesh have warned for two decades that the finest grades (300+ count muslin) cannot now be reproduced. The 19th-century mulmul khas that Dhaka exported, fine enough to pass through a ring, has no known living maker.
Geographical Indication tags (Banarasi 2009, Kanjivaram 2005, ~30 others) provide legal protection against counterfeit labelling but cannot create demand. Power-loom imitations of handloom weaves now flood the market at one-fifth the price. The visual difference is often invisible to a casual buyer; the structural difference — hand-twist irregularities, slight thread variation — is visible only on close inspection. Whether the premium-market segment is large enough to sustain the surviving traditions is an open empirical question.
The other contested question: should government revival schemes prioritize preserving technique (which may mean subsidizing a tiny number of masters) or scaling production (which may mean accepting machine-assisted hybrid forms)? Both camps exist and disagree sharply.
Why this has to do with other realms
Indian textile history is the cleanest case study of a pattern that recurs across concept craft economies: a hereditary specialization accumulates over centuries, gets industrialized in a decade, and survives only as luxury or museum craft. The same arc runs through Swiss watchmaking (quartz crisis, 1970s), Japanese sword-smithing (Meiji-era ban on samurai swords, 1876), and Stradivarius-era violin making. The Indian case is unusual mainly in scale: the displaced craft economy at peak was tens of millions of weavers, not a guild of hundreds.
It also intersects with overview colonial extraction in a specific way. The 1813 Charter Act let Manchester mill-cloth into India duty-free while Indian cloth into Britain faced 70–80% tariffs. By 1830 Indian handloom exports had collapsed; weaver populations in towns like Dhaka fell by 80% across two decades. This was not industrial competition. It was a tariff structure designed to flip the trade direction.
An open question
If a tradition's last master dies before the technique is documented to reproducible precision, has the tradition ended — or only paused? The Dhaka muslin revival project (Bangladesh, 2014–) is trying to answer this experimentally. They have not yet matched the 19th-century thread counts. What would success even look like — the cloth, or the unbroken chain that made it?

A block-print vendor in Jaipur who has two skilled karigar families on-floor and three in overflow is not the same as one with eight, and the number matters when you're compressing lead time to get a drop into stores before a festival window closes. A 14-step Ajrakh resist-print cycle turns a routine reorder into a twelve-week commitment, which changes what you can bet on at range-sign. The crafts don't fail for lack of beauty; they fail when the buying calendar has no room for what they actually require.
