The Printing Press — Information's First Big Bang
The first mass media machine also made Europe less able to agree on what was true. Around 1450 in Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg joined movable metal type, oil-based ink, and the screw press into a repeatable manufacturing system for text. By 1500, European presses had produced roughly 20 million books. The result was not instant enlightenment; it was cheaper knowledge, faster heresy, louder propaganda, and a new fight over authority.
What changed
Before print, a book was a copied object. A Bible could take months of skilled labor. Tables of stars, medicines, or legal clauses picked up errors each time a scribe touched them.
Print changed the unit economics of thought. Once type was set, the next copy was much cheaper than the first. The Gutenberg Bible, printed around 1455, ran to about 180 copies. By 1500, presses operated in more than 250 European towns.
The sharp shift was not only speed. It was sameness. A mathematician in Venice and a reader in Paris could now argue from the same page, the same diagram, the same pagination. That sounds small until you remember that science depends on shared objects of dispute.
The first media war
Martin Luther understood print faster than most institutions around him. Between 1518 and 1520, hundreds of thousands of copies of his pamphlets moved through German-speaking Europe. A theological dispute became a distribution problem.
The same machine carried sermons, calendars, medical recipes, pornography, witchcraft pamphlets, royal decrees, maps, and music. Printed music mattered because notation could now travel without a teacher standing beside it. A song became a reproducible artifact, not only a performance.
The cost was noise. The French Wars of Religion ran from 1562 to 1598. The Thirty Years' War ran from 1618 to 1648 and killed millions. Print did not cause those wars by itself, but it gave factions a cheap engine for recruitment, accusation, and memory.
What print did to the mind
Print rewarded private reading. A person alone with a book could compare claims across pages, reread a sentence, annotate a margin, and decide that a priest, king, or teacher was wrong.
It also rewarded linear argument. Descartes' Meditations in 1641 and Newton's Principia in 1687 assume a reader who can follow a chain across many pages. That reader is historically recent.
Cheap text weakened memory culture. In oral systems, knowledge has to live in bodies, songs, routes, and rituals. concept polynesian wayfinding shows the opposite solution: navigation encoded in trained memory because the ocean gives no written page.
What's contested
Historians still argue over causality. Elizabeth Eisenstein made the strong case that print was an agent of large-scale change. Adrian Johns pushed back, arguing that early print was messy, pirated, error-prone, and trusted only after new institutions taught readers how to judge it.
The numbers are also estimates. “20 million books by 1500” is a useful benchmark, not a census. Survival bias, lost editions, and uneven records make exact counts impossible.
The deeper dispute is whether print created modernity or amplified pressures already present: cities, universities, trade, vernacular religion, state bureaucracy, and better paper supply.
Why this has to do with other realms
The printing press is an ancestor of computing because it separated information from the hand that made it.
