The Bronze Age Collapse (~1177 BC)

Greece's population fell an estimated 75–90% in the century after 1177 BC. Writing was forgotten. The Mycenaean palaces, the Hittite Empire, Ugarit, Kassite Babylon — half a dozen distinct civilizations that had traded tin and grain and diplomatic letters for three centuries — all went dark inside about fifty years. It is the only documented case in human history of an entire interconnected world ending nearly at once.

The puzzle is not that any one of them fell. Civilizations fall. The puzzle is the synchrony.

What actually happened, in numbers

The cascade model (Cline et al., 2025)

The old "multiple simultaneous disasters" story has been replaced by something sharper. A 2025 Risk Analysis paper by Galaitsi, Trump, Cline, Kitsak, and Linkov applied modern network-resilience tools to Bronze Age trade and diplomatic records. Their finding: this was not a coincidence pile-up. It was a cascade failure in an over-coupled supply network.

The chain ran roughly: drought in Hatti → Hittite grain demand on Cyprus → Cypriot copper exports disrupted → tin from Afghanistan and Cornwall arrives but cannot be alloyed → bronze production fails everywhere → palace economies whose legitimacy rested on producing weapons and prestige goods lose authority → migration, raiding, more disruption. The same interconnectedness that produced Late Bronze Age prosperity is what made the system brittle. RAND and TU Delft risk analysts now study 1177 BC with the same network tools used for power grids and semiconductor supply chains.

Drought, earthquakes (a documented seismic cluster 1225–1175 BC across Mycenae, Tiryns, Ugarit, Hazor, Megiddo), plague (Yersinia pestis confirmed in Anatolian Bronze Age livestock, Cell 2025), and Sea Peoples migrations are all real. They are not five independent causes. They are nodes that took each other down.

The Sea Peoples were probably refugees

Ramesses III's mortuary temple at Medinet Habu names them: Peleset, Tjeker, Shekelesh, Denyen, Weshesh. Ancient DNA work on Philistine remains at Ashkelon (Feldman et al., Science Advances, 2019) found Aegean-related ancestry that diluted into local Levantine DNA within two or three generations. The current consensus, including Cline's revised view: the Sea Peoples were themselves displaced by the same drought-collapse hitting their homelands. The "invasion" was a domino of displacement — symptom and accelerant, not first cause.

What's contested

The dramatic "1177 BC" framing is partly modern myth. Jesse Millek's Destruction and Its Impact on Ancient Societies at the End of the Bronze Age (2023) audited 153 destruction events conventionally pinned to ~1200 BC and found roughly 61% are misdated, assumed, or artifacts of citation chains — scholars citing scholars citing the original assertion. Cypriot pottery trade actually ended by 1300 BC. Mycenaean pottery trade ended around 1250 BC. Egyptian trade continued past 1200 BC. The collapse was more protracted and uneven than the single-year headline allows.

Also contested: how bad it was for ordinary people. Palace economies extracted labor and grain at rates that look extractive by any standard. After collapse, smaller and more egalitarian village networks formed across the Aegean. Skeletal evidence from the post-palatial period shows roughly stable or improved nutrition in some regions. The collapse of complexity was not uniformly bad for the people inside it — a finding that sits uncomfortably with collapse-as-tragedy framing.

What was actually lost

Linear B's loss is less dramatic than it sounds. The surviving tablets are accounting records — grain tallies, wool inventories, labor registers at Pylos counting thousands of textile workers. No poems, no histories, no laws. Oral culture continued; the Iliad and Odyssey were composed during the "dark ages" and only written down after the Phoenician alphabet reached Greece around 800 BC.

What was genuinely lost was the bronze supply chain (tin from Afghanistan and Cornwall, copper from Cyprus, alloyed at palace centers — the most globalized industrial system before the Industrial Revolution), and the palace-bureaucratic administrative class that ran it.

What replaced it was simpler and more durable. Cyprus pivoted to iron, whose ore is geographically common, partly causing the Iron Age. Phoenician city-states filled the trade vacuum left by Ugarit. Phoenician script — designed for merchants, not scribal specialists — replaced 80-symbol Linear B and 600-symbol cuneiform. The most consequential cultural technology in human history emerged from civilizational catastrophe.

Why this has to do with other realms

The Late Bronze Age trade web has the same topology as a modern semiconductor supply chain, a global container-shipping network, or the internet backbone: dense, optimized, efficient, and resilient to random failure but catastrophically fragile to correlated failures. The 2025 Risk Analysis paper makes the analogy explicit. When one node fails for reasons that also weaken its neighbors — drought, pandemic, a contested choke point — the network can run away from equilibrium faster than any participant can react. This is the same mathematics as concept turbulence, where small perturbations in a coupled system amplify rather than damp out. 1177 BC is the best-documented historical instance of a civilizational-scale turbulent transition, and it is increasingly studied as such — not by archaeologists alone, but by the same complex-systems community that models cascading blackouts.

An open question

If a network's prosperity and its fragility are produced by the same property — tight coupling — then "more resilience" usually means accepting less efficiency. Which of today's tightly coupled systems is the closest analog to the Late Bronze Age trade web, and would anyone with power inside it accept the cost of de-coupling before the cascade started?
