Alpha Centauri System

Alpha Centauri is not one nearby star. It is three stars, and the nearest one is not the famous Sun-like pair.

Alpha Centauri A and B sit 4.37 light-years away, locked in a 79.9-year binary orbit. Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf 4.24 light-years from Earth, drifts about 13,000 AU from that pair and owns the only confirmed planets in the system. If humans ever send hardware to another star, this is the first address that makes the math hurt least.

A and B swing from about 11 AU to 36 AU apart, roughly Saturn-distance to Pluto-distance in Solar System terms. To the naked eye from Earth, their combined light is magnitude -0.27, making Alpha Centauri the third-brightest star in the night sky after Sirius and Canopus.

The system is close, not easy

A spacecraft crossing 4.37 light-years at Voyager 1 speed would need about 75,000 years. mission breakthrough starshot tries to shrink that to roughly 20-25 years by pushing gram-scale probes to about 0.2c with ground lasers. That solves travel time on paper and creates other problems: aiming across 41 trillion kilometers, surviving dust hits, sending data home with a postage-stamp transmitter, and slowing down not at all.

The sharper fact is this: Alpha Centauri is the only star system where interstellar flight can be discussed without immediately becoming archaeology. At 0.1c, the trip is about 44 years. At 0.2c, the probe arrives within one human career, though the radio signal still takes 4.37 years to return.

Planets are the unresolved prize

Proxima has the headline planet: dest proxima centauri b, announced in 2016, with a minimum mass near 1.3 Earths and an 11.2-day orbit. It sits in Proxima's habitable zone, but Proxima is a flare star. A planet can be in the right temperature band and still lose an atmosphere under repeated stellar violence.

Alpha Centauri A and B are more tempting because they are calmer, Sun-like targets. A rocky planet in A's habitable zone would orbit near 1.2 AU. Around B, the zone is closer, roughly 0.7 AU. The problem is detection: two bright stars, moving around each other, inject noise into radial velocity and imaging campaigns. Alpha Centauri Bb, announced in 2012, was later rejected by later analyses as likely an artifact of stellar activity and sampling.

What's contested

The big question is not whether Alpha Centauri has planets. Planet formation models say it probably should. The contested part is whether stable, Earth-sized planets can survive and be found in the habitable zones of A or B despite the binary orbit and observational noise.

There is also a practical dispute hiding under the romance of "nearest star." A flyby probe at 0.2c may return a few images and spectra. An orbiter would need to shed enormous kinetic energy at arrival, turning the mission from hard into something closer to a century-scale civilization project.

Why this has to do with other realms

Alpha Centauri is a physics page pretending to be a destination page. The system turns compare travel times from a table into a verdict: propulsion is not a feature of interstellar exploration, it is the whole gate.

It also belongs next to biology. A planet around Proxima would test whether life can persist under flare radiation and tidal locking. A planet around Alpha Centauri A would test a different question: whether Earth-like worlds around Sun-like stars are common right next door, or whether concept fermi paradox starts getting sharper at a distance of only 4.37 light-years.
