World as Simulation
A simulated world would not be fake to the people inside it. The pain, markets, marriages, monsoons, elections, and memories would still happen at the level where observers can be hurt by them. Nick Bostrom's 2003 argument is not "Elon Musk vibes with physics"; it is a three-door probability trap about extinction, future indifference, and ancestor-simulations.
The argument
Bostrom's Simulation Argument says at least one of three claims is true:
- Almost every civilization at our stage dies before it can run ancestor-simulations.
- Almost every civilization that can run them chooses not to.
- Almost every observer like us lives inside one.
The sting is in scale. If a posthuman civilization could run billions of detailed human histories, then simulated observers would outnumber base-reality observers. From inside the count, "base reality" becomes the rare case.
David Chalmers takes the colder route in Reality+ (2022): even if this is a simulation, chairs are still chairs, money still buys food, and virtual suffering is not pretend suffering. The metaphysical address changes; the lived facts do not vanish.
What physics does, and does not, give us
Physics already speaks in limits that sound computational. The Planck length is about 1.616 x 10^-35 metres. The Bekenstein bound links information to energy and radius. Seth Lloyd estimated in 2002 that the observable universe could have performed about 10^120 elementary operations since the Big Bang.
None of this proves a simulator. Discreteness, information bounds, and quantum measurement are native to physics before anyone adds a cosmic computer. Treating "quantum observation" as render-on-demand is a metaphor until it predicts a measurement that standard quantum theory does not.

The Advaita parallel
Advaita Vedanta does not need silicon to make the sharper claim: ordinary reality is not false, but it is not final. Shankara, writing in the 8th century CE, treats the empirical world as vyavaharika satya, the level where action, duty, memory, and error operate. Brahman is paramarthika satya, the level that does not depend on appearances.
The parallel with concept maya is structural, not identical. Simulation theory asks whether matter is computed by a substrate. Advaita asks why the witness mistakes changing appearances for the Self. One starts with machines; the other starts with consciousness.

What's contested
The live question is not whether simulation is imaginable. It is whether the argument assigns real probabilities or only rearranges unknowns. We do not know the survival rate of technological civilizations, the cost of high-fidelity minds, or whether future beings would be allowed to run suffering ancestors for curiosity.
The Hindu parallel is contested too. Calling maya a simulation can clarify the shape for modern readers, but it can also flatten Advaita into tech vocabulary. Shankara is not doing computer science before computers; he is making an ontological claim about appearance, ignorance, and liberation.
Why this has to do with other realms
The simulation question sits between concept technological singularity and concept maya because both ask what happens when the visible layer stops being the deepest layer. AI makes the engineering version concrete: if minds can be copied, sped up, or hosted, the line between person and process gets harder to draw.
It also touches concept fermi paradox. Bostrom's first door says advanced civilizations may rarely survive. Fermi's silence asks the same question from the sky: if technological life tends to spread, why is the galaxy quiet?
An open question
If a future system can run minds that remember a past they never physically lived, what moral status belongs to the memory: data, personhood, or something our present language cannot hold?

Abhishek's take
The part that grabs me is not "maybe life is a video game." It is the discipline of acting seriously inside a model while remembering the model is not the territory. In retail, a forecast, a sales curve, a fabric handfeel, and a buyer's memory all compete to become "truth"; the expensive mistake is forgetting which layer you are standing in.
