Vimana
The strongest vimana evidence is also the weakest aviation evidence: Sanskrit texts describe flight with vivid confidence, but the most technical manual arrives in print only in 1973. That gap matters. A vimana can mean a palace, temple tower, divine vehicle, aerial chariot, or later a claimed machine, depending on the century and text. The question is not “did ancient India have airplanes?” The sharper question is why flight became such a durable image in Sanskrit imagination, from the Ramayana to the 20th-century Vaimanika Shastra.
The textual stack
The Ramayana gives the most famous vehicle: Pushpaka, first linked to Kubera, seized by Ravana, then used by Rama after the Lanka war. It moves by intention, carries many passengers, and behaves less like an aircraft than a royal palace with sky privileges.
The Mahabharata uses aerial motion as part of war, spectacle, and divine intervention. Chariots rise, weapons descend, and sky-borne combat signals status as much as transport. This is narrative technology: the machine tells the reader who has access to power.
The technical turn comes later. Bhoja’s Samarangana Sutradhara, usually placed in the 11th century CE, is an architecture and mechanical-devices text of 83 chapters. Chapter 31, the Yantra-vidhana, discusses machines and includes short passages on wooden flying devices, mercury, and heat. The language is real enough to study as technical Sanskrit; the engineering is not enough to reconstruct a working craft.
Then comes the problem child: the Vaimanika Shastra. G. R. Josyer published it in 1973 as a text attributed to Bharadvaja and transmitted through Pandit Subbaraya Shastry, who died in 1940. It names four vimanas: Shakuna, Sundara, Rukma, and Tripura. In 1974, H. S. Mukunda, S. M. Deshpande, H. R. Nagendra, A. Prabhu, and S. P. Govindaraju at IISc studied the designs and judged them aerodynamically unworkable.

The “mercury vortex engine” phrase is the hinge. Mercury appears in medieval Indian alchemy and mechanical speculation, so its presence in a machine text is not shocking. The leap from that to powered aviation is the fragile step.
What's unknown
Textual history is the live issue. The Vaimanika Shastra may preserve older motifs, but its known publication history runs through 20th-century transmission, not an independently dated ancient manuscript. That does not make the whole vimana tradition fake; it makes the engineering claim carry a heavier burden than the literary claim.
The other open problem is genre. If Pushpaka is read as aircraft, the text looks like lost technology. If it is read as royal myth, it looks like political theology in motion. Both readings explain some evidence; neither explains why the image survived across so many registers.
Why this has to do with other realms
Vimanas sit between text ramayana and concept history of flight because humans imagined flight long before they built it. Icarus, Ezekiel’s chariot, Chinese kite lore, Da Vinci’s ornithopter sketches, and Pushpaka all do the same cultural work: they make vertical escape visible before physics permits it.
The archaeology question is stricter. A literary machine is not an artifact. Until there is material evidence, datable drawings, workshop remains, or metallurgy tied to lift and propulsion, vimanas belong closer to concept mythic technology than to mission breakthrough starshot.

Abhishek's take
The interesting part is not whether Pushpaka was an airplane. It is that Indian texts gave flight a political grammar: kings, gods, and engineers all reach for the sky, but for different reasons. I trust the IISc critique on the 1973 designs, but I do not think that exhausts the older question: why did Sanskrit literature keep returning to aerial movement when grounded power was already enough?
