Uruk Accounting Tokens
Writing did not begin with poetry. It began with someone needing to remember how many sheep, jars of oil, and measures of grain had moved through a temple storehouse.
By the late Uruk period, roughly 3400-3000 BCE, southern Mesopotamia had grown into a machine of fields, workshops, rations, labor gangs, and offerings. Clay tokens were small, durable counters used before and alongside the first tablets. The uncomfortable lesson is that literature appears late; administration gets there first.
How the tokens worked
Denise Schmandt-Besserat argued that Near Eastern clay tokens go back to about 8000 BCE, long before urban writing. The shapes mattered. A cone, sphere, disk, or tetrahedron could stand for a class of commodity, not a sound in speech. Counting was physical before it was graphic.
The key move was the clay envelope, or bulla. Tokens could be sealed inside a hollow clay ball. Marks pressed on the outside recorded what was inside, so the envelope did not need to be broken each time. That outer mark is the bridge: the object being counted becomes an impression, then a sign.
The jump from token to tablet was not a switch from primitive to advanced. It was a storage problem. Tokens were good for one transaction. Tablets handled many lines, many people, and later audit.
The Uruk accounting stack
Late Uruk tablets are not full sentences. Many are lists: numbers, commodities, officials, institutions. They are closer to spreadsheets than essays.

This is why Uruk belongs beside concept information theory more than beside romantic myths about scribes. The token compresses a messy world into a manipulable sign. A flock becomes a number. A jar becomes a category. A worker's ration becomes a line item.
What is contested
Schmandt-Besserat's token-to-writing thesis is the widely cited account, but not every specialist accepts the whole chain in its direct form. The hard question is continuity: did tokens directly cause writing, or did both tokens and tablets emerge from a wider administrative culture that was already getting denser?
There is also a sampling problem. Clay survives. Wood, fiber, leather, and spoken routines rarely do. Archaeology may be over-reading the medium that happened to last.
Why this crosses realms
Uruk accounting looks ancient until you notice the same pattern in tech jacquard loom: a physical token becomes an instruction. Holes in cards controlled cloth; impressed marks controlled grain. In both cases, abstraction begins when a small object stands in for a repeatable operation.
It also sharpens mission voyager 1. The Golden Record is culture packed into a durable artifact for an unknown reader. Uruk tablets are the opposite: not a greeting to the cosmos, but a message to next month's clerk. Both depend on the same wager, that marks can outlive the body that made them.

The part that grabs me is not that writing came from accounting. It is that abstraction entered through boredom: rations, jars, sheep, fields, seals. Civilization's first data model was not heroic. It was a receipt.
I trust this origin story because it is so unglamorous. When a tool survives for 5,000 years, it usually began by saving someone from a repeated mistake.
