The First UPC Scan
At 8:01 a.m. on 26 June 1974, a ten-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit became the first retail product scanned with a UPC. The register charged 67 cents, but the consequential object was not the gum or the laser. It was a machine-readable identity that turned checkout from a payment desk into a source of inventory data.
What happened in Troy
Cashier Sharon Buchanan scanned the gum for Clyde Dawson, Marsh Supermarkets’ research director, at a store in Troy, Ohio. Marsh had installed ten Spectra-Physics Model A scanners, each priced at $4,000 in 1974 before installation and training.
The choice of gum was deliberate. A barcode that worked only on cereal boxes would not be universal; Wrigley had proved that one could be printed on a package holding 50 sticks. The small yellow pack became the test object for an industry standard.
What the scanner actually read
A UPC does not contain a price. It carries a 12-digit product identifier; the store computer maps that identifier to a description and price. The final digit catches common reading and transcription errors:
3(d₁+d₃+d₅+d₇+d₉+d₁₁) + d₂+d₄+d₆+d₈+d₁₀+d₁₂ ≡ 0 mod 10
That separation matters. A retailer can change a price without reprinting the manufacturer’s package, while every scan still points to the same product record.
The scan did not create accurate inventory by itself. It created a dependable event that an inventory system could count.
The larger break
Before UPC, a cashier entered a price. After UPC, the checkout identified an item. That one change made sales visible by product, store, and time, supplying the raw observations behind replenishment, assortment analysis, and concept size curve decisions.
The lineage runs backwards to Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver’s 1952 barcode patent, then sideways into concept fabric as data and tech jacquard loom. All three convert a physical object into instructions a machine can distinguish. concept information theory supplies the deeper frame: the valuable output of a checkout is not merely revenue, but a reduction in uncertainty about what customers chose.
What is contested
The invention has several legitimate claimants. Woodland and Silver patented the bull’s-eye ancestor; IBM engineer George Laurer designed the rectangular UPC adopted by the grocery industry in 1973; the industry committee supplied the common standard that made competing scanners and manufacturers cooperate.
The claim that UPC produced real-time inventory is also too neat. A scan identifies a product type, not an individual unit, and bad receiving records, theft, returns, or incorrect master data still corrupt the count. The barcode made concept quick response possible as a data loop; it did not guarantee the operating discipline seen in concept inditex playbook.
An open question
The first UPC told a store which product had moved. When every garment carries a serialized identity rather than a product-level code, does the shop become an inventory system with walls, or a sensor network that happens to sell clothes?

The 67-cent gum interests me because it marks the instant retail gained a memory. On a buying floor, a SKU begins as a forecast; each clean scan turns part of that forecast into evidence. The barcode’s real invention was not faster billing, but the feedback loop.
