Uluburun Shipwreck
One ship, sunk around 1320 BCE off the southern Turkish coast, carried cargo from at least eleven cultures: Cypriot copper, Central Asian tin, Canaanite resin, Baltic amber, African ebony, hippopotamus ivory, and a gold scarab inscribed for Nefertiti. The hold is a manifest of the entire eastern Mediterranean economy three centuries before Homer wrote about it.
What was on board
A sponge diver named Mehmed Çakir spotted "metal biscuits with ears" at 44 meters depth in 1982. Eleven seasons of excavation by INA (Institute of Nautical Archaeology) followed, ending in 1994. The cargo, by weight and provenance:
- 10 tons of copper in 354 oxhide ingots, sourced by lead-isotope analysis to Cypriot mines near Apliki.
- 1 ton of tin in ingots — origin still debated, but isotope work points toward the Mushiston deposits in Tajikistan or Anatolia. Tin was the bottleneck metal of the Bronze Age; you cannot make bronze without it.
- 149 Canaanite jars holding roughly a ton of terebinth resin (Pistacia atlantica), an incense and varnish ingredient prized in Egyptian ritual.
- Baltic amber beads, traveled approximately 3,000 km overland before reaching the ship.
- Logs of African ebony (called hbny in Egyptian texts).
- Hippopotamus and elephant ivory, including a complete elephant tusk.
- Glass ingots in cobalt blue and turquoise, the earliest known intact examples of raw glass trade.
- A gold scarab inscribed with the name of Queen Nefertiti — the only object of hers ever found outside Egypt.
- Weapons and tools from Mycenaean, Canaanite, Egyptian, Cypriot, and Nubian workshops. Two Mycenaean seal-bearers were likely on board as passengers or envoys.
The 10:1 copper-to-tin ratio is exactly what bronze-smithing requires. This was not a mixed cargo by accident.
What it proves
Before Uluburun, the prevailing model of Bronze Age trade leaned on royal gift-exchange documented in the Amarna Letters: pharaohs and Hittite kings swapping luxuries through diplomatic envoys. Uluburun forced a revision. The volume, the standardization of the oxhide ingot shape (designed to be carried by two men, one over each shoulder), and the commercial mix of bulk metals with packaged luxuries describe something closer to a market economy with shipping infrastructure.
The ship itself, built of Lebanese cedar with mortise-and-tenon joinery, was probably Canaanite or Cypriot, sailing a counterclockwise route: Levant to Cyprus to the Aegean and back. It sank against a rocky headland near Kaş, almost certainly in a storm.
What's still contested
The tin's origin remains the live debate. Isotopes are consistent with both Central Asian and Anatolian sources, and the supply chain implied by Tajik tin reaching a ship off Turkey — at least 4,000 km — is so demanding that some specialists argue for a closer, currently unidentified source. If the Central Asian provenance holds, the Bronze Age trade web stretched further east than concept silk road would for another 1,200 years.
The ship's destination is also unresolved. Mycenaean Greece is the leading guess based on the seal-bearers and the route, but a stop at a Cypriot or Anatolian port en route cannot be ruled out.
Why this has to do with other realms
Uluburun is an concept archaeology page that doubles as economics. The cargo is a cross-section of a concept supply chain running from the Baltic to the Nile, from Afghanistan to the Aegean, with concept cyprus copper as the load-bearing commodity. Within a century of this ship sinking, the entire system collapsed in the event bronze age collapse — palaces burned, scripts were lost, trade routes vanished for centuries. Uluburun is the last clear photograph of what was lost.
It is also a case study in how a single accident becomes the highest-resolution evidence we have for an entire era. Written sources from the Late Bronze Age survive in fragments; a sunken ship preserves the inventory that scribes never bothered to write down.
An open question
If one shipwreck can rewrite the map of Bronze Age trade, how many comparable wrecks lie unexplored along the Levantine and Anatolian coasts — and what would the next one change?
