Tarim Mummies

They wore tartan. The bodies pulled from the sand around the Taklamakan desert, some dated to roughly 1800 BCE, were buried in twill wool textiles patterned in plaid weaves that look uncannily like the cloth a Celtic weaver would make 3,000 kilometers away and a thousand years later. For decades the obvious read was migration: Indo-Europeans walked east, bringing language, sheep, and looms. Then in 2021 the genetics came back and broke that story.

The find

The desiccated bodies surfaced over a century of digs at sites along the Tarim Basin's northern and southern rims: Qäwrighul, Xiaohe, Gumugou, Zaghunluq. The desert preserved them with brutal fidelity. Eyelashes, felt hats, leather boots, woven baskets of millet and wheat, even bowls of ephedra twigs tucked beside the corpses. The earliest cluster, at Xiaohe and Qäwrighul, dates to around 2100-1700 BCE. Later groups extend into the first millennium BCE.

The Xiaohe cemetery alone yielded over 330 burials inside a single mound, each marked by a tall wooden post shaped like a phallus or vulva depending on the buried person's sex. Boats were used as coffins. There are no boats in the Taklamakan and no rivers worth speaking of either. The grammar of the burial points outward, away.

The twill problem

The textiles are the diagnostic artifact. Twill weaving, where the weft passes over two warps and under one in a staggered pattern, produces the diagonal ribbing visible in modern denim and tartan. It is not the obvious way to weave cloth. Plain weave is simpler and older. Twill, especially the wool tartans of Cherchen and Zaghunluq, requires a specific loom setup and a specific design tradition.

The closest contemporaneous parallels for this weave technology in 1800 BCE are in Hallstatt-era Europe and the Caucasus. The Cherchen Man, buried around 1000 BCE, was wrapped in cloth so similar to Iron Age Celtic textile that Elizabeth Wayland Barber, the textile archaeologist who studied them, argued for shared technical ancestry rather than convergence. The 2021 genome surprise

Until 2021 the consensus reconstruction was: Indo-European pastoralists from the Pontic-Caspian steppe pushed east through the Afanasievo culture in the Altai, mixed with locals, and reached the Tarim by the early Bronze Age. The mummies' European-looking features, the wool tartans, and the later Tocharian-language manuscripts found in the same basin all pointed the same direction.

Then Christina Warinner, Choongwon Jeong, and colleagues sequenced thirteen of the earliest mummies. The result, published in Nature, October 2021: the Xiaohe people were not migrants. They were genetic descendants of the Ancient North Eurasian (ANE) population, a Pleistocene-era group whose ancestry survives in highest concentration in Indigenous Siberians and Native Americans. The mummies were a long-isolated local lineage that had been in or near the Tarim region for thousands of years.

The wheat, the sheep, the cattle, the twill loom, the wagon spoke parts: all imported. The people were not.

What's contested

This breaks the simple migration story but does not resolve it. Three open questions:

First, the Tocharian puzzle. The Tarim Basin is where, around 600-800 CE, Buddhist monks left manuscripts in Tocharian A and B, two extinct Indo-European languages more closely related to Celtic and Italic than to Sanskrit or Iranian. If the Bronze Age population was not Indo-European, when did Tocharian arrive? The genetics push the language arrival forward in time, into a window archaeology has not yet mapped. Second, how does material culture travel without people? The 2021 paper proposes the Tarim population adopted agriculture, animals, and weaving from neighbors (the Afanasievo to the north, the Bactria-Margiana complex to the southwest) through contact rather than replacement. This is plausible but it stretches the usual archaeological assumption that distinct material packages mark distinct populations. The Tarim case is now a textbook counterexample.

Third, the phenotype question. Some of the later mummies (Cherchen, c. 1000 BCE) have light hair, deep-set eyes, and tall stature. These are not the Xiaohe genetic profile. Later waves of admixture, partly from the steppe, partly from the Iranian plateau, did reach the basin. The visual "European" impression that drove a century of speculation was real for the later bodies, just not for the founders.

Why this has to do with other realms

The Tarim story is the cleanest counterexample to the assumption that culture, language, and ancestry travel as one bundle. A population can adopt a foreign technology stack (looms, livestock, grain) wholesale while remaining genetically unchanged for millennia. This complicates how archaeologists read the Bronze Age elsewhere, and it raises the question of how technology actually spreads. Apprenticeship? Trade in finished goods? Captured craftspeople? The twill weave did not walk to the Tarim on its own legs. Someone taught someone, and that transmission left no genetic signature. The same puzzle haunts the spread of concept bronze metallurgy across Eurasia.

An open question

If the Xiaohe people were genetically isolated for thousands of years while sitting on what would become the concept silk road, what were they trading with their neighbors that left wheat and wool but not genes? Marriage networks usually leak in both directions. The Tarim's did not.
