Ship of Theseus — Identity, Continuity, and the Self
Your cortical neurons are the same cells you had at birth. Almost everything else in your body has been replaced — skin every 2-3 weeks, red blood cells every 120 days, liver every 1-2 years, roughly 98% of atoms across a decade. The planks of the ship persist exactly where the ship's shape is doing the most work, and rot away everywhere else. Plutarch's paradox is not a riddle about boats. It is the daily condition of being a person.
The four theories, briefly
Physical continuity. You are your matter. Fails immediately against atomic turnover. Survives, weakly, in the observation that cortical neurons themselves are never replaced — though their synaptic wiring rewires constantly. The planks last; the ship's geometry shifts under you.
Psychological continuity (Locke, 1689; Parfit, 1984). You are an unbroken chain of overlapping memories, desires, beliefs. Parfit's Reasons and Persons refined this into Relation R — connectedness plus continuity — and drew a conclusion most readers find uncomfortable: identity itself is not what matters. R is what matters, and R can hold partially, and R can branch.
Narrative identity (Ricoeur, MacIntyre). You are the story you keep telling. Same body with a different narrative = different person. The Ship of Theseus is the same ship as long as Athens keeps calling it that.
No-self (Buddhist anattā). There is no persisting self, only a stream of causally linked psychophysical events. A 2024 paper in the Asian Journal of Philosophy argues Buddhist reductionism handles branching cases more cleanly than Parfit's own version, because it never required singular identity to begin with.
The teleporter and the fission case
Parfit's setup: a teleporter scans you, destroys you, reconstructs you on Mars atom-for-atom. Intuition says you survived. Now the machine glitches — Mars-you is built, but Earth-you was not destroyed. Two people, both with full psychological continuity, both with equal claim.
Parfit's move: stop asking which one is "really" you. There is no further fact. R is preserved in both. In the sense that matters, both are you, and the demand for a single answer is the bug, not the data. This is fission, and the Ship of Theseus — original planks reassembled into a second ship, while the patched ship still sails — is fission in slow motion. Hobbes saw the structure in 1655. Parfit gave it teeth.
Identity from the inside: split brains
Roger Sperry won the 1981 Nobel Prize for showing that patients whose corpus callosum had been severed to treat epilepsy now housed two semi-independent streams of consciousness in one skull. The right hand literally did not know what the left hand was doing. The language-dominant left hemisphere confabulated stories to explain actions the right hemisphere had initiated. Each side could hold different preferences and direct the body antagonistically.
Severe anterograde amnesia (Henry Molaison, "H.M.", studied 1953-2008) is the opposite cut: a single brain whose psychological chain to its future selves has been guillotined. Every morning is a new beginning. On Parfit's account, the "same person" relation has weakened toward its minimum without quite vanishing.
The brain is the only plank of the ship anyone seems to fight over. Heart transplants, liver transplants, prosthetic limbs — nobody disputes that the patient survived. Almost every philosopher who has been asked agrees: if your brain were transplanted into another body, you would follow the brain.

Cryonics divides philosophers more sharply than teleportation, because the original is not destroyed but the psychological chain is severed for a century. AI model lineages break the framework differently: a checkpoint can be copied exactly (two identical "originals"), branched (two fine-tunes diverging), or merged (literal Hobbesian reassembly from planks of different ships). A 2025 SSRN working paper by Yogeshwaran Balaji argues neither psychological nor physical continuity handles this topology cleanly.
What's contested
Parfit's claim that identity is not what matters is widely cited and not widely believed. The standard objection: if I am told the Earth-original will be painlessly destroyed after the Mars-copy is verified, I feel something is being taken from me that Relation R cannot account for. Whether that feeling is tracking a real metaphysical fact or merely a deep evolutionary attachment to bodily continuity is the open question.
A second contested point: Buddhist reductionism and Parfitian reductionism are often equated and shouldn't be. Parfit asks whether there is a fact about which future person is you. The Buddha asks whether grasping at any concept of self causes suffering. The first is metaphysics; the second is therapy. They converge on the same denial of a separate self and then walk in different directions about what to do next.
A third: nobody has a clean account of why the brain seems to matter more than other organs. The functional story (it's where memory and personality live) is the obvious answer, but it imports psychological continuity as a premise rather than deriving it.
Why this has to do with other realms
The Ship of Theseus is not philosophy's private problem. concept quantum error correction keeps a logical qubit alive by continuously replacing the physical qubits encoding it — the planks turn over every cycle while the information persists, which is exactly Locke's account of personal identity implemented in hardware. concept tardigrades in CAHS-gel biostasis halt all chemistry for years and resume, demonstrating that "the same organism" can survive an arbitrarily long gap in process, which is the empirical case cryonicists are betting on. And concept synthetic biology's xenobots reorganize frog cells into entities that no frog ever was — same atoms, new ship, and no obvious answer to whether anything has "persisted" through the reassembly.
An open question
If a copy of you with perfect Relation R is run on silicon while the biological original keeps living, and you can speak to it daily, which of you gets to make decisions about the shared bank account — and on what principle?
