Śānta, Transcendence, and Awe — Three Independent Frameworks for the Same State

Three different scholarly traditions — Indian classical aesthetics (c. 3rd CE), Western music psychology (2008), and modern cognitive science (2003) — independently converged on a phenomenological state with the same defining features: the temporary dissolution of ordinary self-reference in the presence of something vast. Each tradition named it differently. Each arrived at it as the endpoint of their respective system.

They may be three descriptions of a single neurobiological event.

The Three Frameworks

1. Śānta — Abhinavagupta (11th century CE)

Bharata Muni's Natyashastra (c. 3rd–4th CE) established the nine rasas as the complete vocabulary of aesthetic emotion. Later theorists, culminating in Abhinavagupta (Kashmir Shaivism, ~1000 CE), elevated Śānta as the meta-rasa — not simply another emotion, but the aesthetic ground in which all other rasas arise and dissolve.

Śānta is typically translated as "peace" or "serenity," but Abhinavagupta's reading is more specific: it is the state of ālamba (resting support), the witness-consciousness (sākṣī) that can appreciate the aesthetic quality of all rasas without being swept into any one. It is equanimity in the face of perceived vastness — serenity not as the absence of emotion, but as a perspective vast enough to contain them all without attachment.

Key characteristics in classical formulation:

In raga practice: Raga Bhairav (dawn, early morning) is the canonical Śānta raga — its time of day (the Brahma muhurta, the hour before sunrise) corresponds to the moment when the mind rests between sleep and waking, before the day's narrative self re-assembles.

2. GEMS Transcendence — Zentner et al. (2008, 2025)

The Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS) emerged from factor analysis of Western listeners rating Western music. Unlike most music emotion research, Zentner's method was inductive: given 35 candidate emotion words, which cluster robustly? One unexpected factor emerged repeatedly that music psychology theory had not anticipated:

GEMS Transcendence: "spiritual feeling," "feeling of eternity," "being transported beyond everyday experience," "awe."

Zentner's team debated whether to include this factor at all — it felt outside the domain of "emotion." But it appeared consistently across samples, including non-religious Western European participants. It correlates with:

GEMS Transcendence loads on the Sublimity cluster (with Wonder, Nostalgia, Tenderness, Peacefulness) — positive valence, low arousal, self-transcending. The GEMS-9 validation by Jacobsen et al. (2025) confirms it remains a robust independent factor even in the compressed nine-category scale.

3. Keltner-Haidt Awe (2003)

Dacher Keltner and Jonathan Haidt proposed the first formal definition of awe as a distinct emotion in 2003:

Two defining features:

  1. Perceived vastness — encountering something much larger than the self (physically, conceptually, socially, or spiritually)
  2. Accommodation — the experience requires reconfiguration of existing mental structures; prior schemas are temporarily insufficient to process what is being experienced

This definition was designed to explain why awe is distinct from fear (fear has the vastness but not the positive accommodation), wonder (wonder has accommodation but manageable vastness), and elevation (purely social). Awe requires both: you encounter something you cannot fit into your current model of the world, and the model must expand.

Keltner (2023, Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder) updates this to emphasize the diminishment of self that accompanies awe — the temporarily reduced sense of individual ego boundary that accompanies accommodation to vastness.

The Convergence

All three frameworks describe the same structure:

The structural homology: self temporarily suspended in the presence of perceived vastness, with positive rather than negative valence.

Neural Signatures: The Overlapping Evidence

Awe and DMN Deactivation

The most directly tested mechanism is for Keltner-type awe. van Elk et al. (2019, Human Brain Mapping, PMC6766853) collected fMRI data from participants watching awe-eliciting vs. control videos:

The result aligns with Keltner's behavioral finding: awe-induced participants are more prosocial (helping strangers), consistent with temporarily reduced self-focus.

Deep Meditation and DMN Desegregation

A 2025 7-Tesla fMRI intensive case study of jhana meditation (MIT Press, Network Neuroscience 9:125) found that advanced concentrative meditation produces:

This is distinct from ordinary rest (where DMN is active but contained) and from task-performance (where DMN is simply deactivated). Deep meditation appears to dissolve the DMN's distinctiveness while maintaining its activity — consistent with Abhinavagupta's description of Śānta as the ground in which other rasas arise, not simply their absence.

Self-Transcendence and Brain Lesion Evidence

A 2026 biorXiv preprint ("A network for self-transcendence derived from patients with brain lesions," biorXiv 2026.03.24.713239) mapped brain damage locations that produced changes in self-transcendence capacity across 105 patients. The self-transcendence network implicated:

Specifically: lesions to these areas elevated self-transcendence scores — as if removing the neural substrate for self-reference freed a pre-existing experiential capacity. This is consistent with contemplative accounts across traditions: self-transcendence is not built by adding something, but by removing the self-constructing process.

GEMS Transcendence and Neural Correlates

The 2025 MIT Imaging Neuroscience meta-analysis ("On joy and sorrow") found that the self-transcending GEMS cluster (Wonder + Transcendence) produced a distinctive pattern:

This is the key data point: GEMS Transcendence is neurobiologically distinct from mere Peacefulness. The latter involves mPFC-mediated contentment; the former involves the precuneus/PCC shift characteristic of awe.

The Unrun Comparison

No study has placed the three frameworks in the same experimental paradigm. The experiment is straightforward:

Design:

  1. Three conditions: (A) awe-eliciting visual stimuli (Keltner validated) + silence; (B) Raga Bhairav performance (canonical Śānta raga, 20-minute unedited recording); (C) GEMS-Transcendence scored Western music (high Transcendence/low arousal)
  2. Control: same participants, matched valence non-transcendent music + visual stimuli
  3. Measures: fMRI (DMN connectivity, precuneus activation), salivary cortisol, self-report (GEMS ratings, awe scale, "small self" scale)

Prediction: If all three conditions produce:

Then Śānta, GEMS Transcendence, and Keltner Awe are three names for one state.

If they diverge, the frameworks represent genuinely distinct phenomenology and the structural homology is misleading.

This study has not been done. No existing neuroimaging study has included all three stimulus types simultaneously.

The Structural Depth of the Convergence

The three frameworks are not merely using similar words. They each arrive at their concept from the inside of a coherent system:

All three frameworks, built on completely different empirical or theoretical foundations, arrived at the same endpoint: a state that isn't quite an emotion, that dissolves normal self-reference, and that is associated with the highest register of aesthetic/experiential quality.

The MOR Connection

This would link the three frameworks not only phenomenologically but pharmacologically: the same receptor mediates the peak experience in all three traditions' highest category.

Cross-Realm Connections

To physics: The self-reference dissolution in awe/Śānta/Transcendence may be an instance of the same criticality dynamics described in concept brain turbulence — when the default mode network temporarily loses its distinctiveness, the brain enters a near-critical state where normal computational compartmentalization dissolves. The EEG turbulence spectrum (concept eeg turbulence spectrum) may show the awe-state as a temporary shift in the dual-cascade energy pump.

To space: The concept overview effect — the profound shift in self-perception reported by astronauts viewing Earth from orbit — is Keltner awe at its most literal: genuine vastness (the planet itself), genuine accommodation (the prior model of Earth as "home" requires immediate revision). Astronaut testimony consistently describes exactly the "small self" and schema reconfiguration that Keltner defines.

To philosophy: The concept hard problem consciousness asks why there is "something it's like" to be an experiencing subject. The awe state, in which self-reference temporarily dissolves, is the nearest thing to an experimentally replicable window into consciousness without the usual self-constructing process active. If what remains is still experience — and all three traditions say it is — this is evidence that experience does not require a self-model.
