Rapa Nui Collapse
The most famous "ecological suicide" story in popular science may not have happened. Jared Diamond's 2005 telling — islanders cut down the last palm to roll a moai, then starved — is now contested by archaeologists who argue the population never collapsed before Europeans arrived, and that the trees were eaten by rats long before the last statue moved.
The standard story
Rapa Nui (Easter Island) sits 3,512 km west of mainland Chile and 2,075 km east of Pitcairn, the most isolated permanently inhabited place on Earth. Polynesians arrived by canoe, raised roughly 900 moai weighing up to 86 tonnes, and built a society whose ceremonial scale dwarfs the island's 163 km². The forest, dominated by the giant Jubaea-relative palm Paschalococos disperta, disappeared. By the time Roggeveen landed on Easter Sunday 1722, the island was treeless grassland.
Diamond's Collapse (2005) wove these facts into a parable: peak population of 15,000+ stripped the forest to transport statues, soil eroded, food collapsed, society fell into warfare and cannibalism, and survivors toppled their own moai in despair. The lesson was explicitly aimed at modern readers — Rapa Nui as a closed-system warning for Earth.
The Hunt-Lipo counter-case
Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo's fieldwork, summarized in The Statues That Walked (2011), reframes nearly every element:
- Arrival date. Radiocarbon dating of the earliest secure occupation layers points to ~1200 CE, not the ~800 CE Diamond used. That compresses the entire "rise and fall" arc to ~500 years and removes the slow-overshoot dynamic.
- Population. No archaeological evidence supports a peak of 15,000+ followed by a crash. Hunt and Lipo estimate steady-state population around 3,000-4,000 — roughly what Roggeveen's crew described in 1722.
- Deforestation cause. Pacific rats (Rattus exulans), which arrived with the colonists, eat palm seeds. Palm nuts excavated on the island show rat gnaw marks on the great majority sampled. With no seed germination, the palm forest was demographically dead long before the last mature tree fell, regardless of human cutting.
- Statue transport. Experimental archaeology in 2012 walked a 4.35-tonne moai replica down a road using only ropes and 18 people. The traditional Rapa Nui claim that "the statues walked" turns out to describe a real rocking technique that needs no log rollers.
- The real collapse. Population crashed after 1722, not before. Slave raids (Peruvian blackbirders in 1862-63 took ~1,500 people), smallpox, and missionary-era dislocation reduced the island's population to 111 individuals by 1877.
What's contested
The Hunt-Lipo case is not consensus. Critics point to lake-sediment cores showing charcoal layers consistent with human burning, isotopic evidence of dietary stress, and genomic studies that find traces consistent with a pre-contact bottleneck. A 2024 ancient-DNA paper in Nature argued the genetic data show no large pre-contact crash, which Hunt and Lipo cite as supporting their position; Diamond and others responded that genetic bottleneck signals are notoriously hard to date precisely.
The honest summary: the rats-and-no-collapse model has shifted the field, but "Rapa Nui as morality play" is sticky in public culture in a way the archaeology may never displace. The case is now what philosophers of science call a contested classic — the textbook story and the field-current story disagree, and the textbook is winning the citation war.
Why this has to do with other realms
Rapa Nui is the worked example everyone uses when teaching concept collapse theory in environmental policy classes. If the standard story is wrong, the lesson is not "small societies destroy themselves through overshoot" but something closer to "isolated populations are catastrophically vulnerable to outside contact." That second framing belongs in epidemiology and colonial history, not in sustainability seminars. It also reframes the concept fermi paradox "great filter" argument when ecocide is offered as evidence that civilizations routinely self-terminate.
An open question
If the rats-and-contact model is right, what other "ecological collapse" cases in popular literature (the Maya, the Anasazi, Greenland's Norse) have the same structure — real depopulation that the popular telling has assigned to the wrong cause? Each deserves the same forensic re-examination.
