Ranked-Choice vs Approval Voting
Australia adopted preferential voting for its House of Representatives in 1918 because one side of politics was splitting its own vote. Fargo, North Dakota adopted approval voting in 2018 because a city ballot with multiple candidates needed a cleaner way to express consent. Both systems attack the spoiler problem. They disagree on what a vote is.
Ranked-choice voting asks for an ordered story: first, second, third. Approval voting asks for a boundary: acceptable or not. That small ballot-design choice changes campaigns, counting, strategy, and what a winner can claim.
The Split
Single-winner ranked-choice voting, usually called instant-runoff voting in U.S. city debates, eliminates the last-place candidate by first-choice votes. Ballots for that candidate transfer to the next ranked candidate still in the race. The count repeats until one candidate has a majority of active ballots.
Approval voting does one count. A voter may approve any number of candidates. The candidate with the most approvals wins.

The hidden question is not technical. Does an election need to know the order of your desires, or only the line below which you say no?
How The Count Moves
Ranked-choice is built for a world where blocs split. A voter can rank a minor-party candidate first and a major-party ally second. That was the Australian problem after the Country Party began competing against the Nationalist Party in the 1910s.
Approval voting is built for a world where acceptability matters more than rank. A voter can approve a favorite, a tolerable compromise, and nobody else. Brams and Fishburn argued in 1978 that this can reward candidates with broad support in crowded fields.
Neither ballot removes strategy. Ranked-choice voters can still worry about whether ranking a compromise first helps block a worse outcome. Approval voters must choose a cutoff: favorite only, all acceptable candidates, or every candidate above the nightmare line.
What's Contested
Ranked-choice supporters argue that approval voting throws away real information. If I approve A and B, the count cannot tell that A is my first choice and B is merely tolerable. In a close race, that feels like flattening the voter.
Approval supporters answer that ranked-choice can lose a broadly acceptable candidate too early. If that candidate starts with few first-choice votes, later support may never activate. The ballot records order, but the count does not read every order at once.
The deeper wound is Arrow's 1951 result. Under broad assumptions, no ranked voting method can satisfy every fairness condition at the same time. That does not make every system equal. It means every election rule chooses its failure mode in public.

The practical difference shows up before counting day. Ranked-choice campaigns ask for second and third rankings. Approval campaigns ask voters to approve more than one candidate when they can live with more than one winner.
Why This Has To Do With Other Realms
Voting systems are measurement devices. Ranked-choice measures order under pressure. Approval voting measures a threshold. That is close to the problem in concept fermi paradox: one frame asks where the civilizations are; another asks whether the detection threshold is wrong.
The same logic sits inside engineering. mission voyager 1 tells us what one instrument can still detect after decades in deep space. A ballot is also an instrument. It does not reveal "the public will"; it reveals the part of public judgment the instrument was built to register.

I prefer approval voting as an instrument because it asks the question politics often hides: who can I live with? Ranked-choice has the richer ballot, but richer input does not always mean a cleaner public signal. The open question for me is whether voters want to express identity first or build a tolerable outcome first.
