Raglan Sleeve
The raglan sleeve begins with a missing arm. FitzRoy Somerset, later Lord Raglan, lost his right arm after Waterloo in 1815; the sleeve named after him moves the armhole seam from the shoulder to a diagonal line running from underarm to neck. What looks like a sporty baseball-shirt detail is really pattern geometry solving a dressing problem.
A set-in sleeve asks the body to respect a hard shoulder point. A raglan sleeve removes that point. The garment becomes more forgiving at the shoulder, easier to layer, and cleaner over bodies that do not match the block.
How the Cut Works
In a set-in sleeve, the sleeve cap is sewn into an armhole. The shoulder seam ends near the acromion bone, and the sleeve must fit both the arm and the torso with some precision. A raglan sleeve absorbs part of the shoulder into the sleeve pattern itself.
That diagonal seam does two jobs. It creates arm mobility because the sleeve is not trapped at a fixed shoulder cap, and it changes the visual line of the upper body. A raglan can soften a broad shoulder, lengthen a narrow one, or make a coat sit over knitwear without the shoulder collapsing into a ridge.
The usual pattern decision is not “raglan or not.” It is where the diagonal starts, how deep the armhole sits, and how much ease lives under the arm. A high raglan can look sharp. A low raglan can feel like a sweatshirt. A two-piece raglan sleeve can shape the elbow and shoulder better than a single flat sleeve.
Where It Shows Up
The raglan survives because it solves three different problems with one cut: injury, movement, and production tolerance.

The baseball raglan made the construction visible. Contrast sleeves turn the diagonal seam into a graphic line. The military coat version did the opposite: it hid asymmetry after an amputation. Same geometry, opposite social task.
That is why raglan belongs beside concept pattern making, not only in fashion history. Pattern blocks are quiet instruments of negotiation between anatomy, cloth, and use. The raglan sleeve is one of the cleanest examples: change one seam, change the body's range of motion.
What's Contested
The broad origin story is stable: the name points to Lord Raglan, Waterloo, and post-amputation clothing. The exact design authorship is less clean. Did Raglan himself invent the sleeve, did a tailor adapt it for him, or did his name attach later to an older construction? The Oxford English Dictionary records the term entering the New English Dictionary in 1903, but the garment logic predates the dictionary label.
There is also a fit debate. Raglan is often sold as “comfortable,” but comfort can come at the cost of definition. On a tailored coat, a poorly controlled raglan sleeve looks tired before the garment is even worn. Ease is not the same as elegance.
Cross-Realm Bridge
The raglan sleeve has the same logic as concept jacquard loom in reverse. Jacquard turns pattern into data; raglan turns bodily constraint into pattern. Both show that fashion is not surface first. It is encoded decision-making in cloth.
