Nuclear Semiotics
In 1993, Sandia asked engineers to warn a reader in 11,993 about radioactive waste buried near Carlsbad, New Mexico. English may be as opaque to that reader as Linear A is to us, while a grand monument may signal treasure rather than danger. Nuclear semiotics is the attempt to make “do not dig here” survive both erosion and interpretation.
The message stack
The Sandia panel rejected the idea of one timeless symbol. Its answer was redundancy: architecture, pictographs, written language, scientific diagrams, buried records, and archives should fail at different rates.
A 2004 implementation plan turned that logic into 32 perimeter monuments, 16 markers around the repository footprint, a berm planned at 33 feet high and 98 feet wide, and two buried information rooms measuring 39 × 22 × 16 feet. Messages were planned in seven languages, with star positions, geological sections, elemental tables, faces, and drilling diagrams. The monument was meant to become its own concept-information-theory.
Architecture that says no
The report’s famous drawings include Landscape of Thorns, Spike Field, and Menacing Earthworks. Concrete spikes and broken geometries were supposed to make danger felt before any inscription was read.
That creates the central trap. A structure large enough to survive may look sacred. A buried chamber may invite excavation. Precise stonework may imply that something valuable lies below. The marker must appear deliberate without becoming a temple, treasure map, or archaeological dare.
What’s contested
No evidence shows that disgust, menace, or the radiation trefoil will retain the same meaning for 10,000 years. Thomas Sebeok’s 1984 alternative was a social relay: each generation would translate the warning for the next, backed by ritual and specialist custodians. That handles language drift but depends on an institution surviving roughly twice the 6,000-to-8,000-year recovery limit described in concept language isolates.
The settled part is narrower: stone, language, archives, and institutions can all fail. The live dispute concerns which combination fails slowly enough.
The message sent in the opposite direction
The mission-voyager-1 and a nuclear marker solve mirror-image problems. Voyager uses 115 images, 55 spoken greetings, pulsar periods, and hydrogen physics to invite an unknown reader closer. WIPP must establish shared meaning, then persuade its reader to leave.
Both expose the same weakness seen in the concept indus valley script: an artifact can survive while its decoding context disappears. Physical preservation is not information preservation.
An open question
Could a marker communicate danger so clearly that it survives language death, yet so uninterestingly that nobody excavates it to learn more?

Abhishek's take
The part I cannot shake is that the marker must look deliberate without looking valuable. I trust layered failure more than a perfect glyph: stone, stars, diagrams, archives, and repeated translation each cover a different failure mode.
