Navarasa and the Universal Emotion Question
Bharata Muni catalogued nine aesthetic states a performance could evoke. Paul Ekman ran lab studies and found six basic emotions with universal facial signatures. The two systems are separated by roughly two millennia and half a planet. They overlap on four categories, diverge sharply on two, and the divergence is more interesting than the overlap.
The nine, and what they actually are
Bharata's Natyashastra (compiled ~200 BCE to 400 CE) names eight rasas. Abhinavagupta, an 11th-century Kashmiri philosopher, added the ninth and the most contested: shanta, equanimity.

A rasa is not an emotion. It is the audience's aesthetic experience of an emotion staged by a performer. Bharata defines it as the cooked composite of sthayi bhava (the dominant mood), vyabhichari bhava (transient supporting moods), and sattvika bhava — the involuntary physical signs: sweating, pallor, hair standing on end, voice breaking, trembling, tears. This is performance engineering, not folk psychology. Bharata's question was not "what do people feel" but "what reliably makes an audience produce these eight (later nine) responses."
Where it overlaps Ekman, and where it doesn't
Ekman's 1972 cross-cultural studies in Papua New Guinea produced six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust. Contempt was added later.
Four direct correspondences: hasya/happiness, karuna/sadness, bhayanaka/fear, raudra/anger, bibhatsa/disgust. That is striking convergence for two systems built without contact.
The mismatches matter more. Ekman has surprise as a primary; the rasa system folds it into adbhuta (wonder) — a richer, more sustained category than a 200-millisecond facial twitch. Ekman has no analogue to veera (heroism, sustained energetic resolve) or shanta (tranquility). The rasa system has no analogue to contempt. Both systems independently treat fear and disgust as adjacent — the same pairing that falls out of the modern valence-arousal circumplex.
What EEG actually shows
A 2022 Brain Informatics study recorded EEG from participants watching standardized film clips matched to each of the nine rasas and reported distinct oscillatory signatures across delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma bands. Bhayanaka and bibhatsa clustered closest — unpleasant, high-arousal, consistent with the circumplex. Shanta sat alone with low-frequency dominance, matching meditative low-arousal states. Theta and gamma carried most of the discrimination between pleasant and unpleasant rasas.
A separate 2018 functional-connectivity study (to verify: arXiv preprint on rasa-evoked brain networks) reported that different rasas recruit different network topologies, not different intensities of the same network. If that finding holds, aesthetic states have topological distinctness in neural space — different shapes, not different volumes.
These are small-sample, culture-specific studies. None has been replicated across cultures yet.
What's contested
The Ekman framework is under serious pressure. Lisa Feldman Barrett's constructionist account (Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2017; book-length in How Emotions Are Made, 2017) argues emotions are not innate biological programs but constructions the brain assembles from interoception, prior experience, and culturally-supplied categories. A 2023 Scientific Reports paper reported that in spontaneous real-world settings, facial expressions tracked Ekman's predicted categories poorly. Cross-cultural sorting tasks show people partition the same expressions into different categories depending on the emotion vocabulary their language gives them.
This actually rescues the rasa system rather than wounding it. Bharata never claimed biological universality. Rasa is explicitly culture-mediated: the same scene evokes different rasas depending on the audience's training and context. The current synthesis — core valence-arousal axes appear cross-cultural, fine-grained categories are language-shaped — fits the rasa framework better than Ekman's.
The open empirical question: is shanta a real state or a philosophical addition? Early commentators rejected it. Abhinavagupta argued the highest aesthetic experience is the dissolution of all other rasas into self-aware stillness. The EEG signature is suggestive. Whether shanta is a ninth category or a meta-state — the absence of the other eight — is unsettled.
Why this has to do with other realms
The sattvika bhava — hair standing on end, voice breaking, involuntary tears — is the same physiological cluster that modern researchers call concept frisson. The dopamine and endogenous opioid response to prediction violation in music is the mechanism behind a phenomenon Bharata catalogued by careful audience observation 1,800 years before fMRI. Raga theory (concept raga theory) is the production system: specific scale structures, microtonal ornaments, and time-of-day conventions engineered to deliver specific rasas. Together, raga and rasa form a working music-emotion stack — one of the oldest empirical aesthetics programs on record.
An open question
If shanta is the dissolution of the other rasas into tranquil self-awareness, is it the same neural state as the concept overview effect reported by astronauts looking back at Earth — or has Indian aesthetics been describing a category that Western psychology still has no word for?
