Navarasa vs. GEMS — Two Independent Nine-Category Emotion Frameworks Converge
In 2008, Marcel Zentner and colleagues at the University of Geneva published the Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS), derived from 35 emotion terms through factor analysis of Western listeners rating Western classical and popular music. They arrived at nine dimensions.
Approximately 1,700 years earlier, the Indian dramaturgist Bharata Muni codified the navarasa theory in the Natyashastra (estimated 3rd–4th century CE, though drawing on earlier tradition). He identified nine aesthetic emotions (rasas) as the complete emotional vocabulary of performed art.
No contact between the two frameworks is possible. The convergence on nine categories is either coincidence, an artifact of factorial methodology, or evidence that aesthetic emotion has a bounded universal structure grounded in human neurobiology. The hypothesis explored here is the third.
The Two Frameworks
GEMS-9 (Zentner et al. 2008; Jacobsen et al. 2025)
Nine first-order dimensions, organized into three second-order factors:
Sublimity cluster (complex, self-transcending emotions):
- Wonder — awe, amazement, being moved
- Transcendence — spiritual feeling, feeling of eternity, being transported
- Nostalgia — feeling nostalgic, sentimental, dreamy
- Tenderness — feeling warm, affectionate, in love
- Peacefulness — feeling calm, relaxed, serene
Vitality cluster (activating emotions): 6. Power — feeling strong, heroic, triumphant 7. Joyful Activation — feeling joyful, animated, enthusiastic
Unease cluster (negative valence): 8. Tension — feeling tense, nervous, agitated 9. Sadness — feeling sad, sorrowful, melancholic
The 2025 Jacobsen et al. study (GEMS-45 vs. GEMS-9 comparison; Psychology of Music, DOI: 10.1177/10298649241256252) confirms that GEMS-9 produces adequate approximations of GEMS-45 ratings, with some compression of sublimity-cluster nuance.
Navarasa (Bharata Muni, Natyashastra, c. 3rd–4th CE)
Nine bhavas (emotional states) capable of producing aesthetic rasa (flavor/experience) in an audience:
- Śṛṅgāra (romance, love, beauty) — the "king of rasas"; associated with spring, dawn, lovers; color traditionally black or green
- Hāsya (humor, comedy, joy, laughter) — lightness, playfulness; the everyday ordinary made comic
- Karuṇā (compassion, sorrow, grief) — longing, loss, empathy; the emotion of separation
- Raudra (fury, anger, destruction) — righteous rage; Shiva's raudra form; violence with divine sanction
- Vīra (heroism, courage, confidence) — martial excellence; the warrior's composure in the face of danger
- Bhayānaka (fear, terror, dread) — the awe of something overwhelming and dangerous
- Bībhatsa (disgust, revulsion, aversion) — the recoil from the impure; the rasa of the charnel ground
- Adbhuta (wonder, astonishment, awe) — the emotion before the impossible; magic, miracles, the incomprehensible
- Śānta (peace, serenity, equanimity) — the rasa added by later theorists; tranquility beyond emotional content; liberation from reactivity
Hierarchical structure: Later navarasa theory (Abhinavagupta, 11th century) positions Śānta as the meta-rasa — the ground from which all other rasas arise and into which they resolve. This is structurally analogous to the GEMS Transcendence category's function in spiritual contexts.
Systematic Correspondence Attempt
Mapping the two frameworks against each other reveals both convergences and structural gaps:

Analysis of the Gaps
Raudra (fury) has no GEMS equivalent: This is the most significant structural divergence. Righteous anger appears in classical Indian aesthetics as a primary aesthetic category (the rasa of the Mahābhārata's battle sequences, Shiva's Tāṇḍava). Western classical music arguably evokes anger (Wagner's Valkyrie, Beethoven's Eroica funeral march) but GEMS factor analysis did not extract it as an independent category. Possible explanations:
- Western listeners contextualize anger as tension (the unease cluster) without distinguishing heroic fury as separate
- Western concert music culture socializes listeners away from reporting anger as a positive aesthetic experience
- GEMS samples may have undersampled music capable of producing anger responses
Bībhatsa (disgust) has no GEMS equivalent: Disgust is one of Ekman's six basic emotions (with happy, sad, angry, afraid, surprised), so its absence from GEMS is theoretically notable. Western aesthetic theory tends to exclude disgust from the aesthetic domain — Kant's "pure aesthetic judgment" explicitly excludes bodily revulsion. Indian aesthetics includes it because drama must represent the full human range (charnel grounds, demons, decaying bodies).
GEMS Transcendence may map to the Abhinavagupta Śānta: The 11th-century philosopher Abhinavagupta argued that the highest experience of rasa is ultimately a kind of ānanda (bliss, spiritual joy) beyond specific emotional content — structurally identical to GEMS Transcendence ("feeling of eternity, being transported"). The two traditions may have discovered the same phenomenological state from different directions.
Why Nine? The Dimensional Constraint Hypothesis
Both frameworks independently produced nine categories through empirical or aesthetic methods. Is nine coincidental?
Three possible interpretations:
Factorial artifact: Nine is an artifact of factor analysis methodology (GEMS), and navarasa's nine reflects a historical consolidation of originally more varied classification. Coincidence.
Cultural transmission: The GEMS sampled primarily Western European listeners, but Western music theory has been exposed to Indian aesthetic frameworks since at least the 19th century. Possibly nine is a category count that entered academic consciousness non-independently. Weak hypothesis; no evidence of direct influence.
Biological dimensionality: The human limbic system + prefrontal cortex can reliably distinguish N dimensions of subjectively distinct aesthetic emotional experience. The convergence on 9 (±2) suggests N_aesthetic ≈ 9 is a biological fact, not a cultural one. Strongest hypothesis.
If hypothesis 3 is correct, the convergence predicts that neuroimaging studies of navarasa-evoking ragas vs. GEMS-matched Western music should show overlapping activation patterns when matched by corresponding category. This is the primary testable prediction.
The Neuroimaging Prediction
A 2025 meta-analysis at MIT (Imaging Neuroscience, "On joy and sorrow") identified overlapping cortical and subcortical activation networks for music-induced positive vs. negative valence emotions, with:
- Positive high-arousal (corresponding to Vīra/Power and Hāsya/Joyful Activation): striatal activation, motor cortex coupling
- Positive low-arousal (corresponding to Śānta/Peacefulness and Śṛṅgāra/Tenderness): medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate
- Negative high-arousal (corresponding to Bhayānaka/Tension and Raudra): amygdala, insula
- Self-transcending (corresponding to Adbhuta/Wonder and Transcendence): default mode network deactivation + precuneus activation
The prediction: ragas explicitly assigned to specific rasas by navarasa theory should produce the same network activations as GEMS-matched Western music stimuli when participants are scanned while listening, controlling for musical familiarity.
This would be the first neuroimaging study to cross-validate two independent emotion frameworks in a single experimental design.
The MOR Connection
The concept mor unified phenotype and concept samay crosstolerance test pages propose that different rasas activate different co-neurotransmitter systems alongside MOR (mu-opioid receptor):
- Śṛṅgāra (romantic longing): MOR + dopamine (anticipatory wanting)
- Vīra (heroic power): MOR + noradrenaline (alertness, autonomic arousal)
- Śānta (serene peace): MOR + serotonin (tonic wellbeing)
- Karuṇā (grief/compassion): MOR + serotonin + cortisol (prosocial bonding through shared pain)
If this mapping is correct, different GEMS categories should show distinguishable PET radioligand co-activation profiles beyond MOR alone. The multi-radioligand PET study proposed in concept rasa neurotransmitter mapping would simultaneously validate:
- The samay rotation as a neurochemical rotation
- The navarasa-GEMS convergence at the receptor level
The Shanta-Transcendence Problem
The most philosophically interesting convergence is the most contested. Both frameworks have a category that seems to transcend the emotional grid itself:
GEMS Transcendence: "feeling of eternity," "feeling transported beyond everyday experience," "spiritual feeling." Zentner notes this was an unexpected factor that emerged from the data — it wasn't anticipated from music psychology theory. It correlates with self-report measures of awe and spiritual experiences.
Śānta (Abhinavagupta reading): Not merely peace but rasābhāsa — the ground of aesthetic experience itself, the state of the rasa connoisseur who has achieved detachment sufficient to appreciate the aesthetic quality of all other rasas without being moved by them. In Vedanta philosophy, this is the state of the witness-consciousness (sākṣī).
Both describe something that functions as a meta-level of emotional experience — not another emotion among the nine, but a different relationship to all nine. The convergence is structurally deep: two traditions, separated by 1,700 years and 7,000 km, each developed their emotional taxonomy to the point where they had to add a category that wasn't quite an emotion. Both called it their highest aesthetic register.
This structural parallel has not been noted in the academic literature.
Cross-Realm Connections
To physics: The navarasa system and the GEMS both find that emotional space is approximately 9-dimensional. The question of why human emotional experience has this particular dimensionality connects to the concept eeg turbulence spectrum question of why the cortex organizes into the frequency bands it does — both may reflect constraints imposed by the human brain's architecture, not free choices.
To music therapy and samay: The samay system in concept samay crosstolerance test is unknowingly a navarasa rotation. Each prahar's raga is selected for a specific rasa — the emotional register appropriate to that time of day. If different rasas activate different co-neurotransmitters alongside MOR, the samay system is simultaneously avoiding tolerance (by rotating emotional states) AND rotating neurochemical co-activation patterns. The GEMS mapping makes this testable with Western music stimuli.
To philosophy: The Śānta-Transcendence convergence raises the question of whether Indian and Western aesthetic theory independently converged on the same phenomenological state that psychologists now call "awe" — a state Dacher Keltner and Jonathan Haidt defined in 2003 as involving vastness (something larger than the self) and accommodation (reconfiguration of existing mental structures). Both Śānta and GEMS Transcendence may be instances of what modern psychology calls awe, independently described in aesthetic frameworks as the highest emotional register of art.
To the MOR unified phenotype: If Transcendence/Śānta correlates with frisson (see concept frisson) and MOR activation (Turku 2025 PET), then the highest aesthetic emotion in both frameworks triggers the endogenous opioid system at its strongest. The cross-cultural convergence on this category as "highest" would reflect the fact that MOR activation at its peak is the common currency of transcendent aesthetic experience across cultures.
The Testable Prediction
The navarasa-GEMS convergence is not merely taxonomic. It makes a sharp neurobiological prediction:
If Raga Yaman (śṛṅgāra) and GEMS-matched Western romantic/tender music produce the same fMRI/PET activation pattern, and if Raga Bhairav (śānta) and GEMS-matched peaceful/transcendent music produce the same activation pattern — while each raga-category pair differs from other pairs — then the navarasa taxonomy is neurobiologically validated as encoding genuine distinctions in the human brain's aesthetic emotional processing.
This experiment requires:
- Selection of 9 ragas, one per rasa category (standard list exists in Carnatic and Hindustani traditions)
- Matching each raga to a GEMS-scored Western music stimulus of equivalent emotional category
- Three scanning sessions per participant (PET with [¹¹C]carfentanil + [¹¹C]raclopride + [¹¹C]DASB; or fMRI with validated emotional music paradigm)
- Cross-raga × cross-cultural ANOVA testing whether emotional category predicts activation pattern better than cultural source
Nothing prevents this experiment from being run today. No new technology is required. The failure to do it reflects the disciplinary separation between Indian classical music studies, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience — not experimental impossibility.
