Lunar Nodes
Rahu and Ketu are not planets. They are the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit cuts the Sun's apparent path, and eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon come close to those points. Astrology turned a piece of orbital geometry into two shadow grahas: one hungry head, one severed tail.
The geometry
The Moon does not orbit Earth in the same flat plane that Earth orbits the Sun. Its orbit is tilted by about 5.1 degrees to the ecliptic. The two crossing points are the lunar nodes: the ascending node, called Rahu in Jyotisha, and the descending node, called Ketu.
A new Moon near a node can produce a solar eclipse. A full Moon near a node can produce a lunar eclipse. This is why eclipses do not happen every month: many new and full Moons pass above or below the Sun's path.
The nodes move backward through the zodiac. One full nodal cycle takes about 18.6 years. That slow regression is why the nodal return, near ages 18-19, 37, 56, and 74, gets treated as a life-cycle marker in many astrological systems.
What astrology did with it
Indian astrology names the nodes Rahu and Ketu and treats them as chaya grahas, shadow planets. The word "planet" here is not astronomy. It means a point that participates in chart interpretation.
Rahu tends to be read as appetite, obsession, foreignness, rupture, and amplification. Ketu tends to be read as severance, release, past residue, abstraction, and inwardness. The pair always sit 180 degrees apart. Read well, they are not good-versus-bad; they mark an axis of hunger and subtraction.

The eclipse clue
The old myth is precise in one way: Rahu swallows the Sun or Moon, but only for a while. That is a poetic memory of eclipse mechanics. The body doing the "swallowing" is not a body at all.
The eclipse calendar gives the game away. Eclipse seasons recur about every 173.3 days because the Sun returns to the neighborhood of a node. The Saros, about 18 years 11 days 8 hours, links eclipses with similar geometry. Rahu and Ketu are not superstition pasted onto the sky; they are sky mechanics turned into symbolic grammar.
What's contested
The astronomy is settled: the nodes are orbital intersections, their regression is measurable, and eclipse prediction works from geometry. The contested part is interpretation. Does a natal Rahu-Ketu axis describe anything beyond inherited cultural pattern-reading?
I do not think the clean answer is available from one chart. The harder test is repeatable: take dated life events, blind the astrologer to the biography, and see whether nodal periods beat base-rate guessing. Many astrological claims avoid that test.
Cross-realm bridge
The lunar nodes sit at a useful border between concept ephemeris math and concept symbolic systems. One side can predict the eclipse path across Earth to the kilometer; the other side asks why humans keep turning rare alignments into stories about appetite, fear, and fate.
That same move appears in concept information theory: a signal becomes meaningful only when a receiver has a code for it. Rahu and Ketu are not the signal. They are the code a tradition built around a recurring sky event.

What grabs me here is that the myth did not begin with vague sky poetry. It begins with a hard astronomical constraint: eclipses require nodes. I read Rahu and Ketu as a reminder that symbolic systems need a measurable object, or they drift into decoration.
Where I've used this
I use the nodes when writing astrology code because they force the model to respect astronomy before interpretation. If the ephemeris is wrong, the reading is decoration.
