Grimm's Law

In 1822 Jacob Grimm — yes, the fairy-tale Grimm — published a single chart showing that Latin p became Germanic f with no exceptions. Latin pater is English father. Latin piscis is fish. Latin pes is foot. The same shift turned t into th (tresthree) and k into h (cornuhorn, centumhundred). The claim was small. The implication was that language change followed laws, not whims. Linguistics became a science twenty-seven years before On the Origin of Species.

How the shift works

Grimm described a three-way rotation in Proto-Indo-European (PIE) consonants as they entered Proto-Germanic, sometime between roughly 1500 and 500 BCE. The PIE voiceless stops became fricatives. The voiced stops became voiceless. The aspirated voiced stops became plain voiced. It is a chain: each set vacates its old slot and occupies the next one.

The cleanest test is across cognates. Non-Germanic Indo-European languages (Latin, Greek, Sanskrit) preserve the older consonants. Germanic shifted. So Latin decem, Greek deka, Sanskrit daśa all give English ten. Latin genus, Greek genos, Sanskrit janas give English kin. The pattern holds across hundreds of roots.

Where it broke, and how the break fixed the theory

Grimm's law had embarrassing exceptions. Why did Latin pater give English father (with th from t, expected) but Sanskrit pitár- show a Germanic reflex fadar with a d, not a th? For fifty years this was a stain on the law's claim to lawfulness.

In 1875 the Danish linguist Karl Verner found the missing rule. The exceptions depended on where the PIE accent fell. If the accent was on the syllable before the consonant, Grimm's law applied cleanly. If the accent was elsewhere, the resulting fricative voiced: þ became ð, then d. Verner's law explained the residue. The combined laws had no known exceptions in the inherited vocabulary.

This is the moment historical linguistics became hard science. The Neogrammarian school in Leipzig formalised the principle in the 1870s as Ausnahmslosigkeit der Lautgesetze — sound laws admit no exceptions. Where an apparent exception exists, either another law is operating or the word was borrowed after the shift. The method had predictive power: given the law, you could reconstruct unattested forms and then verify them when older texts surfaced.

What's contested

The chronology and causation are still argued. Was Grimm's shift one event or a sequence stretched over centuries? Estimates range from 500 BCE to 0 CE for completion. Some phonologists treat it as a chain pull (the voiceless stops moved first, dragging the others); others as a chain push (the aspirates collapsed, pushing the rest). A substrate hypothesis proposes Germanic shifted because PIE speakers adopted the language from a non-IE population whose phonology bent the consonants; mainstream historical linguistics treats this as unproven but live.

There is also a deeper unease about the Neogrammarian principle itself. Sociolinguists since William Labov in the 1960s have shown sound change in progress propagates word by word through a community, not as a clean phonological switch. The "exceptionless law" is the end state of a messier diffusion. Both views can be true at different time scales.

Why this has to do with other realms

Grimm's law is the template for any field that wants to reconstruct an unobserved past from present diversity. Phylogenetics in biology does the same trick: cognate genes across species are like cognate words across languages, and shared mutations are like shared sound shifts. Darwin read Lyell on geology and Lyell knew the comparative method; the borrowing went both ways. The comparative method in linguistics also anticipates what concept bayesian inference formalises later — using observed descendants to infer the most probable ancestor.

It is also the first time a humanities discipline produced a falsifiable law. The shape of that achievement matters for concept falsifiability as a criterion: Grimm did not just describe Germanic, he committed to a prediction every future cognate would either confirm or refute.

An open question

If Grimm's law is a chain reaction, what triggered it? Languages do not shift their entire stop system on a whim. Some phonologists suspect contact with a non-IE substrate; others suspect prosodic restructuring after the PIE accent system collapsed. The cause of the first systematic sound law in linguistics is itself not yet a law.

What I love about Grimm's law is that the fairy-tale collector was the rigorous one. The Brothers Grimm catalogued Cinderella and the consonant rotation in the same decade, and the same instinct — collect specimens, look for the pattern, trust the pattern over the individual case — drove both. The pre-Darwin date is the part most people miss: a humanities discipline produced its first falsifiable law before biology did, and almost nobody outside linguistics knows.

Where I've used this

The comparative method shows up in fashion data more than people expect — cognate silhouettes across regional markets reveal a shared ancestor design the way cognate words reveal a shared root. When two clusters of stores carry the "same" garment with small consistent variations, the variations are the sound shifts; the ancestor is what you want to reconstruct to plan the next season.
