Extended Mind
Otto cannot remember where the Museum of Modern Art is, but his notebook can: 53rd Street. Clark and Chalmers’ 1998 thought experiment asks why that written address should count as a mere aid while the same address stored in Inga’s neurons counts as memory. Their answer moves the boundary of mind from the skull to the working system.
The notebook test
Inga recalls the address biologically. Otto, who has Alzheimer’s disease, consults a notebook that he carries, trusts, and updates. Both retrieve a standing belief and act on it.
Clark and Chalmers call this the parity principle: if an external process performs the same functional role that an internal process would, its location alone should not disqualify it from cognition. The claim is not that every book I can open belongs to my mind. Otto’s notebook qualifies because it is reliably available, automatically trusted, and woven into his ordinary action.
The dashed path carries the argument. Losing the notebook does not merely remove information from Otto’s surroundings; it disables a process on which his navigation depends.
Where the boundary becomes useful
A calculator extends arithmetic without necessarily becoming part of every user’s mind. A blind person’s cane is harder to classify as an optional aid because skilled use turns pressure at the hand into perceived texture at the tip. A maintained concept second brain sits between these cases: it may store thousands of notes, yet only the notes embedded in dependable retrieval loops approach Otto’s notebook.
This is also why concept rag is more than a software analogy. A language model plus an indexed corpus can answer questions neither component can answer alone. The system’s competence belongs to the retrieval loop, not cleanly to the model or database.
What is contested
Critics call the central move the coupling-constitution fallacy: a notebook can cause cognition without constituting cognition, just as a telescope helps an astronomer without becoming part of the visual cortex. Robert Rupert adds the problem of cognitive bloat. If reliable access is enough, do my phone, library, search engine, and cooperative friends all become pieces of my mind?
Supporters answer that the relevant unit is not proximity but integration. The live dispute concerns which measurable properties, such as speed, reliability, automatic trust, or reciprocal adaptation, turn an environmental resource into part of a cognitive system. No accepted threshold had settled that boundary as of August 2026.
Why this crosses realms
concept distributed cognition moves the same question from one person to a cockpit, laboratory, or trading desk: where does the thinking occur when no individual holds the full procedure? concept stigmergy pushes it further. Ants and editors coordinate by changing a shared environment, allowing yesterday’s trace to steer today’s action.
Computing reached a similar design through concept memory hierarchy. Registers, RAM, disks, and network stores differ in speed and capacity, yet one program acts through all four. The extended-mind claim asks whether human cognition should also be measured by the complete working path rather than the location of its storage.
An open question
If an external memory begins choosing what to preserve, retrieving material before I ask, and rewriting its own index, when does extension become a second cognitive agent?

My wiki is not a warehouse beside my memory. Its links decide which comparisons I can retrieve, so changing one index can change the thought that becomes available next. Otto’s notebook persuades me when it fails: a broken retrieval path can erase a usable idea without deleting a single sentence.
