Tuyuca Evidentiality
In many Tuyuca assertions, saying that a man played football is grammatically incomplete until the verb records how the speaker knows. Did they see him, hear the game, inspect his footprints, receive a report, or infer it from prior knowledge? English can leave that provenance blank. Tuyuca often puts it inside the verb.
How evidence enters the verb
Tuyuca is an Eastern Tukanoan language of the Vaupés region across Colombia and Brazil. Janet Barnes’s 1984 analysis identifies five evidential categories in statements about present or past events:

Barnes’s famous visual example, díiga apé-wi, translates roughly as “he played football, and I saw it.” The ending -wi carries visual evidence alongside tense and agreement information. Change the source, and the verb ending changes.
The distinction between nonvisual and secondhand matters. Hearing the ball and players is direct sensory evidence; hearing another person describe the match is reported evidence. Tuyuca grammar separates the ear as a sensor from another speaker as a source.
What the grammar does not guarantee
Evidentiality is not a built-in lie detector. A speaker can select a visual marker without having witnessed the event, just as an English speaker can falsely say “I saw it.” The grammar requires a source category, not an honest source.
Nor does every evidential map neatly onto certainty. A reported claim may be trusted; a visual claim may be doubted. Alexandra Aikhenvald treats information source as distinct from epistemic modality, which marks possibility or confidence. Other analyses argue that the two interact too closely in speech to keep fully separate.
The claim that such grammar makes speakers better reasoners is also unsettled. Languages can train attention without determining thought. concept wug test shows that speakers learn productive grammatical distinctions early; it does not show that those distinctions imprison cognition.
Provenance before probability
Tuyuca marks where a claim came from. concept bayes theorem asks what the evidence should do to belief:
P(H | E) ∝ P(E | H) × P(H)
An evidential labels E; Bayes evaluates its effect on H. That makes Tuyuca unexpectedly close to data lineage: a number without origin metadata is harder to audit, just as an assertion without provenance is harder to inspect. concept information theory measures uncertainty, while evidential grammar preserves one fact about the path by which uncertainty was reduced.
The same design problem now appears in concept hallucination. A model can produce a fluent claim while discarding whether it came from a retrieved document, an inference, or a learned statistical pattern. Tuyuca treats that omission as a grammatical defect.
An open question
Would a machine forced to mark every sentence as observed, retrieved, inferred, or assumed hallucinate less, or would it merely learn to conjugate unsupported claims?

The part I want to steal from Tuyuca is not compulsory certainty; it is compulsory provenance. I would rather read a qualified claim marked “inferred from traces” than a confident sentence whose origin has vanished. For AI systems, that small grammatical distinction may matter more than another decimal place on a confidence score.
