Evidentiality in Grammar
In Tuyuca, “he played football” is grammatically unfinished until the speaker discloses how they know. The verb can mark five routes to the claim: seen, otherwise sensed, inferred from evidence, assumed through reasoning, or reported by another person. English lets that trail vanish; Tuyuca puts it inside the sentence.
How evidence becomes grammar
Janet Barnes documented the system in 1984. In an ordinary independent statement about a past event, a Tuyuca verb carries an evidential suffix whose form also interacts with tense and agreement.
The split between nonvisual and reported evidence is the sharpest detail. Hearing the match through a wall is sensory evidence. Hearing someone describe the match is testimony. The event may be identical, but the grammar records two different routes into the speaker’s mind.
An evidential is not a truth score. A witnessed claim can be mistaken, and a reported claim can be accurate. The marker identifies the channel, not its reliability.
What other languages require
Thomas Willett’s 1988 survey showed that languages divide the evidence space differently. Turkish commonly contrasts direct and indirect pasts. Cuzco Quechua uses direct, conjectural, and reportative markers. Tuyuca preserves five distinctions where English relies on optional phrases such as “apparently,” “I heard,” or “it looks like.”
That variation belongs beside concept language isolates. Languages do not merely attach different words to a fixed inventory of ideas; they choose different distinctions that a complete sentence must carry.
What's contested
Alexandra Aikhenvald argues that evidentiality is its own grammatical category, separate from epistemic modality, which marks confidence or probability. Other analyses emphasize how evidentials affect commitment, surprise, and perceived certainty in actual conversation. Source and confidence are separable on paper but frequently entangled in speech.
The stronger claim that obligatory evidentials produce better reasoning also remains unproven. Papafragou, Li, Choi, and Han’s 2007 experiments found similar non-linguistic source-monitoring performance among 3- and 4-year-old Korean- and English-speaking children, even though Korean grammatically marks evidential distinctions.
Why this has to do with other realms
A generated answer can look identical whether it was copied from a document, reconstructed from memory, or inferred from several clues. concept transformer architecture hides those routes behind one fluent surface. Tuyuca suggests another interface: claim, source class, and inference distance presented together.
That makes evidentiality an concept information theory problem. The suffix adds a few bits about provenance, not about the event itself. Those bits change how a listener should update belief.
An open question
If an AI had to mark every sentence as retrieved, observed, inferred, assumed, or reported, would its errors become easier to catch, or would fluent misclassification merely acquire a suffix?

What grabs me is not that Tuyuca has five suffix sets. It is that English lets provenance disappear without leaving a grammatical scar. I want AI answers to behave more like Tuyuca: every confident sentence should reveal whether it came from an observation, a document, or a chain of inference.
