Ephemeris Time
A one-minute birth-time error can move the Ascendant by roughly 0.25 degrees. That is enough to shift house cusps, change a borderline lagna, or move a planet from one interpretive container into another in several chart systems.
Ephemeris time is the clock behind the chart. It is not the wall clock written on a birth certificate. It is the cleaned-up astronomical time scale used to ask a sharper question: where were the Sun, Moon, and planets when this chart began?
How it works
An ephemeris is a table or model of celestial positions by time. Modern astrology software usually converts civil birth data into Universal Time, applies time-zone and daylight-saving rules, converts into a dynamical time scale, then asks a planetary model for longitudes.
The hard part is that Earth is not a perfect clock. Its rotation slows, wobbles, and jumps slightly after earthquakes, tides, and core-mantle motion. Astronomers separate "time kept by Earth's spin" from "time used in orbital equations." The gap is usually called Delta T: roughly the difference between Terrestrial Time and Universal Time.
That gap matters more for old charts than modern charts. For a 2026 birth, Delta T is measured in tens of seconds. For ancient eclipses, it can reach hours because historical Earth-rotation estimates become uncertain.
Where the error enters
The Moon moves about 13 degrees per day against the zodiac. The Ascendant moves faster because it is tied to Earth's rotation. A rough rule: 360 degrees per 24 hours is 15 degrees per hour, or 0.25 degrees per minute.

The point is not that every chart collapses under a small error. Many placements stay stable. The point is that angular features are clock-sensitive, and astrology often gives angular features too much interpretive weight to treat the clock casually.
What's contested
The astronomy is not the contested part. Planetary positions from modern ephemerides are precise enough for ordinary chart work. The fight is over interpretation: whether a shifted cusp has real meaning, whether rectification can recover a true birth time, and whether house systems deserve the precision they claim.
Sidereal astrology adds another layer: the ayanamsa. Two astrologers can use the same birth time and the same planetary ephemeris, then disagree because their zodiac zero point differs. That is a conceptual disagreement, not a calculator error.
Why this crosses realms
Ephemeris time makes astrology depend on the same machinery as spacecraft navigation. JPL Horizons, VSOP87, and Swiss Ephemeris are not mystical artifacts; they are numerical systems for predicting where bodies are when asked.
That links a birth chart to mission voyager 1 in a surprising way. Both need the solar system as a clockwork model, but one uses it to aim a machine past Saturn and the other uses it to interpret a human moment. The shared substrate is concept celestial mechanics, not belief.

Bad input can look like deep interpretation. A wrong time zone, a rounded birth time, or an unexamined ayanamsa can produce a chart that feels precise while being mechanically off.
That is why rectification should be treated as inference, not recovery. It can propose a time that fits events, but it cannot turn memory into measurement.
