Enclothed Cognition
A white coat cut the error count on a difficult attention task from roughly two mistakes to one. The 2012 experiment involved 58 undergraduates, and the benefit appeared when the garment was described as a doctor’s coat rather than a painter’s coat. In 2019, a preregistered replication collected ten times more data and found no coat effect at all.
How clothing was supposed to change thought
Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky proposed two necessary ingredients: the physical experience of wearing a garment and its learned symbolic meaning. Seeing a doctor’s coat was not enough. Wearing the same coat under a different description was not supposed to be enough either.
This places enclothed cognition inside concept embodied cognition, where thinking is partly shaped by bodily states rather than confined to abstract computation. Clothes become cognitive equipment: weight on the shoulders, restricted movement, reflected appearance, and a socially learned role arrive together.
The lab coat result
Adam and Galinsky ran three experiments in 2012. The first used a Stroop task; participants wearing lab coats made fewer errors on incongruent trials. The next two used visual-search tasks and reported better performance when participants wore a coat called a doctor’s coat, compared with wearing a painter’s coat or merely seeing one.
The claim was narrower than “dress well and become smarter.” It predicted an interaction:

That distinction matters. person coco chanel shows clothing changing movement and public identity at social scale; enclothed cognition asks whether the garment also changes the wearer during a five-minute task.
What’s contested
Burns and colleagues repeated the Stroop experiment across four US universities in a preregistered 2019 study with 200 participants. The coat changed neither accuracy nor response time. Their equivalence tests suggested that any effect was too small for the original design to detect reliably. Adam and Galinsky accepted that this result cast doubt on their first experiment.
The wider claim remains unsettled. Horton, Adam, and Galinsky analysed 105 effects from 40 studies involving 3,789 participants. Their paper, first published online in 2023, found weak replicability among early studies but stronger evidence among work published after 2015. That leaves a boundary problem: if every garment, meaning, culture, and task can produce a different outcome, the theory risks explaining failures after they happen.
The cross-realm bridge
A uniform may work less like a drug and more like a context switch. It can change posture, expectations, self-monitoring, and the behaviour of people nearby at the same time. That makes it closer to concept flow state than to a fixed biochemical effect: both depend on a fitted relationship between person, cue, and task.
The contrast with concept overview effect is useful. One claim begins with a garment touching the skin; the other begins with Earth filling a spacecraft window. Both test whether changing the body’s situation can revise the mind’s operating frame.
An open question
If the same garment changes behaviour only when its meaning fits the wearer and the task, is the coat causing cognition, or is it giving the person permission to perform a role?

Fashion is usually analysed as a signal sent outward. I care more about the return signal: what the garment tells the person wearing it. The failed replication does not kill that question; it kills the convenient idea that one white coat supplies a universal answer.
