Default Mode Network
In 2001, Marcus Raichle ran the control condition and found the control condition wasn't a control. When subjects in an fMRI scanner were told to do nothing, a specific circuit lit up more than when they were given a task. The medial prefrontal cortex, the posterior cingulate, the angular gyri on both sides, parts of the precuneus and hippocampus. Raichle named it the default mode network because it was what the brain did by default. The brain consumes roughly 20% of total body energy at rest, and most of that resting consumption goes to this network thinking about itself.
What it does
The DMN activates during four loosely overlapping mental states: thinking about oneself, remembering one's past, imagining one's future, and modeling other people's minds. Quiet the task, and the brain immediately falls back into one of these. Mind-wandering studies estimate adults spend 30-50% of waking hours in DMN-dominant cognition. Killingsworth and Gilbert's 2010 iPhone experience-sampling study (n=2,250) found mind-wandering correlates with lower reported happiness across nearly every activity except sex.
The network is not a single anatomical structure. It is a correlation pattern — regions whose BOLD signals rise and fall together when no task is imposed. Raichle's 2001 PNAS paper defined it by subtraction: take any task-positive scan, subtract the resting baseline, and the regions that show up negative are the DMN. The negative sign is the discovery.

The PCC is the network's hub. It has the highest baseline metabolic rate in the entire cortex. Lesion the PCC and self-referential cognition degrades in measurable, specific ways.
Where it shows up
- Psychedelics. Robin Carhart-Harris's 2012 PNAS paper showed psilocybin reduces DMN activity and inter-region coupling. The subjective experience of ego dissolution maps onto DMN deactivation with unusual cleanliness for a neural correlate. See concept psychedelic renaissance.
- Depression. Major depressive disorder shows DMN hyperactivity and hyperconnectivity, especially during rumination. The depressive loop is in part a DMN that won't quiet down.
- Alzheimer's. The amyloid plaques of early Alzheimer's deposit preferentially in DMN regions. The hub becomes the casualty.
- Meditation. Long-term meditators (>10,000 hours) show reduced DMN activity during rest and weaker coupling between mPFC and PCC. Judson Brewer's lab has published the clearest data here.
- Anesthesia and sleep. DMN connectivity drops under propofol and during NREM sleep. It partially reactivates in REM, which fits with REM's dream-narrative character.
What's contested
Whether the DMN is one network or several. Recent parcellations (Yeo 2011, Buckner 2019) split it into 2-4 subsystems with different functions: a dorsal medial subsystem for social cognition, a medial temporal subsystem for memory and prospection, and a midline core. The "single network" framing may be a coarse-resolution artifact.
Whether DMN dysfunction causes depression and rumination, or is downstream of them. The correlations are robust. The causal direction is not settled.
Whether mind-wandering is a bug or a feature. Killingsworth's data says it costs happiness. But the same network handles autobiographical planning, creative incubation, and theory of mind — functions you cannot easily file under "bug." The wandering mind may be the price the brain pays for the simulating mind.
Why this has to do with other realms
The DMN is the closest neural correlate we have to the philosophical concept of the self as narrative. When the network quiets — under psilocybin, in deep meditation, in flow states — subjects report the dissolution of the autobiographical "I". This is not metaphor. It is measured. Daniel Dennett's "narrative center of gravity" and Thomas Metzinger's "phenomenal self-model" both predict that the self is a construction the brain assembles, not a thing the brain finds. The 20% energy figure connects to a different argument: the brain is metabolically expensive, and expensive organs are under strong selection pressure. If the DMN runs continuously and burns most of the brain's idle budget, it is doing something evolution paid for. Simulating yourself in possible futures is the leading candidate. An open question
If meditation can reliably quiet the DMN, and psilocybin can briefly dissolve it, what does sustained DMN suppression do over years? The contemplative traditions have a long answer. The neuroscience answer is still being written. Whether the dissolved self comes back the same is the question that won't sit still.
