Dark Sky Ethics — Longtermism Under Cosmological Isolation
About 100 billion years from now, a surviving astronomer may look up and see no evidence that the universe ever had other galaxy clusters. The Milky Way and Andromeda will have merged, the Local Group will be the local sky, and accelerated expansion will have pushed distant galaxies beyond practical observation. The ethical problem is not just that the future is long. It is that the future may become informationally sealed.
The hard boundary
Dark energy is not a distant detail. In the standard ΛCDM model, its density stays roughly constant while matter thins out, so expansion accelerates. Galaxies not gravitationally bound to the Local Group recede from causal contact; the future observable universe becomes an island.
Krauss and Scherrer made the cruel version of this point in 2007: future observers may lose the evidence for the Big Bang itself. No cosmic microwave background at usable wavelengths. No visible Hubble flow. No easy path back to 20th-century cosmology. Loeb sharpened the logistics in 2011 with "Milkomeda": after roughly 10¹¹ years, only the merged Milky Way-Andromeda system remains as the dominant observable structure.
The punchline is ethical: longtermism often counts the far future as an enormous ledger of possible lives. Dark sky ethics asks what happens when that ledger has a cosmological boundary.
What changes for longtermism
The standard longtermist move is numerical. If the future may contain trillions of lives across millions or billions of years, present choices carry extreme moral weight. William MacAskill's What We Owe the Future (2022) and Toby Ord's The Precipice (2020) both rely on the size of the possible future, though they differ in emphasis.
Cosmological isolation does not refute that move. It bounds it. A civilization can still have a deep future inside the Local Group, but it cannot treat the visible universe as a warehouse. Matter outside the causal patch becomes scenery, then memory, then nothing usable.

The interesting reversal: a finite cosmic budget can make near-term lives matter more, not less. If the future is not open-ended, then the moral math is less like infinity and more like stewardship of a sealed ship.
What's contested
The physical hinge is dark energy. ΛCDM treats dark energy as a cosmological constant with equation-of-state parameter w = -1. DESI's 2025 DR2 results, read with other datasets, reported hints that dark energy may vary with time, with significance below the 5σ discovery bar. Wang and Freese (2025) argue that part of the signal depends on the chosen w₀-wa parameterization, which is exactly the kind of caveat that matters here.
If dark energy weakens, isolation may take longer or change shape. If phantom energy with w < -1 were real, the universe moves toward a Big Rip rather than a dark island. Caldwell, Kamionkowski, and Weinberg modeled that possibility in 2003. The ethical claim is therefore conditional: dark sky ethics is strongest if positive dark energy persists.
Why this has to do with other realms
The nearest cousin is not another space page. It is concept amoc tipping point. AMOC collapse and cosmological isolation share a structure: a system crosses a threshold, then the old data regime stops being a guide to the new one. One is measured in decades and ocean salinity; the other in 10¹¹ years and horizon distance.
The second bridge is concept deep time. Hutton's 1788 line about "no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end" works as geology, not cosmology. Physics gives the future a shape. Ethics has to decide whether a shaped future is a smaller future, or just a more honest one.
The open question
If a civilization knows that the sky will go dark, should it spend its best centuries spreading outward, archiving the vanishing universe, or learning how to want less?

What grabs me here is the insult to intellectual optimism. A civilization can survive, build instruments, preserve archives, and still lose the sky as evidence. The question is not whether the far future matters; it is whether an ethics built on expansion can stay honest inside a closed room.
