Convergent Evolution — When Life Finds the Same Answer Twice
An octopus and a human both see the world through a lens-focused camera eye. Their last common ancestor, ~600 million years ago, was a soft worm with no eyes at all. Each lineage built the same optical instrument from scratch, with mirror-image wiring. This is the central puzzle of convergent evolution: the solution space for biology is narrower than the diversity of life suggests.

The camera eye case is the sharpest. Vertebrate photoreceptors are ciliary — the light-sensing membrane folds away from incoming light, and a blind spot exists where the optic nerve punches through the retina. Octopus photoreceptors are rhabdomeric — the membrane points toward the light, and there is no blind spot. Different cells, different wiring, same lens and aperture and focal mechanism. Two engineering teams who never met, shipping the same product.
When intelligence is the convergence
The harder claim is that complex cognition itself is convergent. The candidates:
- Cephalopods. Octopuses pass mirror-mark tests inconsistently but solve novel mechanical puzzles, use coconut shells as portable shelters, and show distinct individual personalities. Their nervous system runs ~500 million neurons, two-thirds of which sit in the arms.
- Corvids. New Caledonian crows manufacture hooked tools from twigs, plan for future needs, and pass cognitive tests at the level of great apes. Birds have no neocortex; the avian pallium is differently organized but functionally equivalent on these tasks.
- Cetaceans. Bottlenose dolphins recognize themselves in mirrors, transmit hunting techniques across generations, and form multi-male alliances with stable membership over decades.
- Elephants. Self-recognition, cooperative problem-solving with non-kin, sustained attention to the bones of dead conspecifics.

A 2022 Nature Communications paper by Zolotarov and colleagues found that octopuses underwent a microRNA family expansion of similar magnitude to that seen in vertebrates — roughly 90 novel families, concentrated in neural tissue. What's contested
Three live disputes worth knowing:
Is "intelligence" one thing or many? The convergence argument assumes a single attractor state. Critics — including comparative cognition researcher Sara Shettleworth — argue that "general intelligence" is a vertebrate-centric frame, and that corvid, cephalopod, and primate cognition are doing different jobs that look similar from the outside. If you measure differently, the convergence weakens.
How much is selection, how much is constraint? Stephen Jay Gould's Wonderful Life (1989) argued evolution is contingent — rerun the tape and you get something unrecognizable. Simon Conway Morris's Life's Solution (2003) replied that the tape replays the same outcomes because physics and chemistry leave few viable paths. The empirical record supports more convergence than Gould allowed and more contingency than Conway Morris allows. The exchange is unresolved.
Sample size of one. Every "independent" evolution on Earth shares the same atmospheric chemistry, the same liquid water, the same 24-hour rotation, the same gravity. Convergences across these lineages may say more about Earth's particular constraints than about life's general grammar.
Why this has to do with other realms
Convergent evolution is the closest biology gets to a controlled experiment in the absence of a controlled experiment — the same way archaeologists study pyramid-building societies that never contacted each other to learn what stratified agriculture demands of any species, anywhere. If complex eyes and complex cognition both keep being reinvented under similar pressures, the Drake equation's $f_i$ term — the fraction of life-bearing planets that develop intelligence — looks less like a coin flip and more like a thermodynamic tendency. An open question
If convergent evolution is the rule, what is it converging toward — a fitness peak shaped by physics, or a perceptual peak shaped by the kinds of minds capable of noticing patterns in the first place? The cephalopod is the test case; the page worth writing next is concept umwelt.
