Archaeoacoustics — Hearing the Ancient World
Up to 90% of Paleolithic cave paintings in France sit at the most acoustically resonant spots in their caves. The bull at Lascaux is not on a wall — it is in a chamber that roars when you shout at it. Archaeoacoustics is the discipline that treats this correlation as a clue: that our ancestors chose ritual sites by ear before they chose them by eye.
The premise is uncomfortable for traditional archaeology. Every survey that ignored sound may have missed half the design intent. If true, the Paleolithic cave is not a gallery. It is an instrument the painting hangs inside.
How the field works
The methods are borrowed from concert-hall acoustics. Iegor Reznikoff, the French researcher who started the cave work in the 1980s, walks a cave singing scales and noting where the room sings back. Modern teams add laser scans, ODEON room-acoustic simulations, and ultrasonic pulses played into 1:12 physical models. The physical models still beat the software — diffraction off ruined or irregular surfaces is hard to compute and easy to measure.
Reznikoff's survey of Niaux, Lascaux, Portel, and Font-de-Gaume found that early Paleolithic marks (dots, handprints, ~40,000 years old) cluster in small, dead spaces. Later animal paintings, 15,000-25,000 years old, cluster in chambers reverberant enough to hold a group ritual. The pattern crosses sites and styles, which is what makes it hard to dismiss.

The Salford Stonehenge result deserves its own sentence: someone standing outside the complete sarsen ring in 2200 BCE could barely hear what was happening inside it. The monument was an acoustic enclosure for a small audience, not a public address system. That is a social-class claim recovered from a physics measurement.
What's contested
The causation. David Lubman points out that the same hard non-porous stone that reflects sound also holds paint well, so resonance and painting may both be downstream of rock type rather than one causing the other. Steven Waller goes the other way and argues the paintings represent the perceived source of the echo — a bison drawn where the hoofbeats seemed to come from. Both stories fit Reznikoff's data. Neither has been falsified.
The Chichén Itzá chirp is real and measurable; whether the Maya engineered it or noticed it after the fact is unrecoverable. The Welsh bluestone sonority hypothesis is suggestive but no one has shown that a less-sonorous local stone was rejected.
The largest gap: Göbekli Tepe. The 10-30m T-pillar enclosures at event gobekli tepe are textbook cylindrical resonators with discrete lateral reflectors. The site that may have invented ritual architecture has not been published on as an acoustic instrument as of 2026.
Why this has to do with other realms
The painted caves collapse a distinction modernity invented. Visual art and organized sound were the same ritual technology for the people who made them, and separating them is a 19th-century museum habit projected backward. Once you accept that, the question shifts from "when did humans invent music" to "when did humans first decorate a resonance" — and the answer pushes the origin of organized sound back into the same window as concept cave painting itself.
The Stonehenge result hooks into politics rather than aesthetics. Acoustic enclosure is a way of restricting who hears what, and it predates writing by two thousand years. The same logic runs through medieval choir screens and modern boardroom soundproofing. An open question
If Göbekli Tepe's pillar rings were modelled at 1:12 tomorrow, would they reveal an acoustic signature distinct enough to argue the architects were tuning the space? And if so, does that move the invention of designed acoustics from the Bronze Age back to roughly 9500 BCE?
